In mathematics and other sciences, a formula (plural: formulas or formulae ) is a concise way of expressing information symbolically (as in a mathematical or chemical formula), or a general relationship between quantities. One of many famous formulae is Albert Einstein's E = mc (see special relativity).

In mathematics, a formula is a key to solve an equation with variables. For example, the problem of determining the volume of a sphere is one that requires a significant amount of integral calculus to solve. However, having done this once, mathematicians can produce a formula to describe the volume in terms of some other parameter (the radius for example). This particular formula is:

Having determined this result, and having a sphere of which we know the radius we can quickly and easily determine the volume. Note that the quantities V, the volume, and r the radius are expressed as single letters. This convention, while less important in a relatively simple formula, means that mathematicians can more quickly manipulate larger and more complex formulae.

In general mathematical use there is no essential difference in meaning with the term "expression", although the word "formula" tends to be reserved for an expression that "can stand on its own", that has a meaning outside of the immediate context in which it appears and a significance that can be grasped intuitively.

In a general context, formulae are applied to provide a mathematical solution for real world problems. Some may be general: F = ma, which is one expression of Newton's second law, is applicable to a wide range of physical situations. Other formulae may be specially created to solve a particular problem; for example, using the equation of a sine curve to model the movement of the tides in a bay. In all cases however, formulae form the basis for all calculations.

How do you determine the chemical formula of an ionic compound?
Q. Im studying chemistry right now and i am having trouble determining what the chemical formulas are to ionic and covalent compounds. Here is a sample question: Calcium (Ca) combines with chlorine (Cl) to form calcium chloride, an ionic compound. Calcium has two electrons in its outer energy level and chlorine has seven electrons in its outer energy level. Determine the formula for calcium chloride and EXPLAIN your answer. I researched calcium chloride and found the formula is CaCl2, but on a test i wont be able to research the answer. Are there easy ways to determining chemical formulas? Thank you for helping, Ryan C.

A. In ionic compounds, you have the metals (on the left side of the periodic table) who tend to pass off electrons, and you have the non-metals (on the right side) who have "gaps" in their electron shells and tend to accept electrons. In the case of CaCl2: Chlorine has 7 electrons in its outer shell. A full shell for would require 8 electrons, so it is "looking" for 1 extra electron to fill its outer shell. Calcium has 2 electrons in its outer shell. It would like to give those extra two away, so it's looking for 2 takers. Soo... Chlorine (with the one gap) calls up another Chlorine (also with the one gap), and now you have a total of two gaps. Two extra electrons from Calcium and two gaps from the two Chlorine make a good fit, and… [cont.]

What is the formula for calculating the cumulative interest paid during a specific year?
Q. Does anyone know a formula for calculating the cumulative interest paid on a mortgage during a specific year? For instance, I have a 30 year fixed mortgage. How do I calculate the total amount of interest I paid during year 10 (between months 108 and 120)? I'm looking for a real formula please. Nothing Excel.

A. you just look at the 1098 you get from the mortgage company( should arrive soon if you haven't already received it) or if you get monthly statements, you add up the interest shown on each one

How much formula do I need to mix in with cereal for my 7 month old?
Q. How much formula, and how much cereal do I need to mix for my 7 month old?
Asked by Baby #2 on the way!! - Mon Apr 6 11:24:50 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. All depends on your baby's appetite. I used to mix about 120ml of formula, then drench a handful of cereal for my daughter. If you find you need more cereal - then either use up the rest of the formula or make more. I used to feed the remaining formula for my daughter as her morning drink. You just have to play around with the amounts and cater to your child's appetite.
