What is the formula for calculating the weighted average yield?*
Q. I need to calculate the weighted average yield on a pool of loans, all with different interest rates and balances. Excel doesn't have a weighted average yield formula, so I need to know how to calculate this. Someone borrowed my cash flow textbook so I can't look it up.

A. A weighted average is calculated by doing the following:1) Multiply each interest rate by the balance associated with that rate2) Add up the products from step 13) Add up the balances4) Divide the sum from step 2 by the sum from step 3. The result will be your weighted average yield.

What is the formula in Excel for figuring an interest rate on a loan?*
Q. I need to be able to figure what the interest rate is when the loan amount, payment amount and terms are known. Does anyone know the way to build a formula in Excel for calculating this? That helped somewhat. I used the RATE function to get the monthly rate on a 60 month loan, then multiplied by 12 to get yearly, but it is coming out about .005 percent off. When I put the numbers into my amortization schedule the payment is off by about 25 dollars. (74,500 total loan, 60 months with $1500 pmt is what I want. The rate it gives me makes the payment $1475 in my schedule.)Never mind that last comment. It is working perfectly. THANKS!!!

A. Actually Excel has a number of built in formulas to figure stuff like compound interest. However, to find the interest rate you would use the RATE formula:RATE(Number of payments, Payment, -Amount)For example, if you were financing a car over 5 years, $500/month, 20,000 it would look like this:RATE(60, 500, -20000)

Is Nestle good start supreme soy formula safe to use?*
Q. Has anyone heard about the two babies that died in Belgium from drinking bacteria in their formula? My daughter can only have soy is there another kind that would be better for her? Does this formula have bpa in it?

A. BPA is found in plastic...This link talks about the BPA that has been found in formula: I'm not so sure that it's a 'brand' issue as much as it is a manufacturing/scientific issue. Luckily your baby will only be on formula for a year, so odds are that she'll be fine. Here's what Babycenter.com says: "The group recommended that parents avoid liquid baby formula and use powder formula instead until companies line baby formula cans with bisophenol-free resin, the Toronto Star reported." and "Liquid baby formula in cans is safe and parents shouldn't be concerned, said an association that represents major formula manufacturers, the Star reported."I would not worry if I were you. My daughter has been on every major brand of formula…
