What language my son should choose in 6th grade?
Q. My son will be starting his 6th grade in a few months. We have to decide which language he should choose as an elective. My wife suggests Arabic, while I am suggesting Spanish. Does it matter which language they take in 6 th grade ? Is Arabic offered as a language in undergraduate studies in good schools?
Asked by Alpha Bravo Charlie - Fri May 9 16:17:19 2008 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Definitely Arabic. While Spanish is a useful language, Spanish speakers are getting incredibly easy to find. Arabic speakers are in great demand and becoming more and more in demand every day. Also, for when the time comes for him to take his SAT Subject tests, the Spanish test is virtually impossible. Tons of native Spanish speakers were coming to take it and getting perfect or near-perfect scores, so the test has been changed so that even native speakers can't ace it. It's not this way with Arabic.

How would you classify a 6th grade reading level?
Q. I am a freelance writer and my publisher wants me to write a mystery story at a 6th grade reading level. Does anyone know if there are specific standards as to what would classify a particular body of work as a 6th grade reading level?
Asked by alakazam - Fri Jan 25 12:31:30 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Each state has different standards for reading levels. Most sixth graders will probably still be reading children's books, rather than YA, even if they are advanced readers. In general, sixth graders can read books that are a little more mature--not sexual, but with serious issues, like the Holocaust, or slavery, or homelessness. Keep the vocabulary straightforward, but don't talk down (er, *write* down) to them. If a teacher adopts your book for classroom use, any unfamiliar words could be used to build vocabulary anyway. Even if that doesn't happen, it won't hurt the kids to use a dictionary. ;) Also, most children are uninterested in reading stories about children who are either younger or much older than themselves. Sixth graders… [cont.]

A. 1. He should be able to master math at his current level. Slow incremental work through his lessons with an error rate of no more than 5% will prepare him for the next level. 2. He should be able to write a full page essay every day with minimal errors in grammar, punctuation and spelling. 3. He should be able to read at his current level for a minimum of 2 hours. The books should be of high quality in moral content and in historic value. Historic fiction, autobiographies of important people in history, science texts, and classic literature is a good place to begin. His total academic time should be between 5-6 hours. Can you fail 6th grade if you have good grades all in front than you make two bad grades on your progress repo?
Q. Can you fail 6th grade if you have good grades all year than at the end of the year you make a D in science than another D in social studies? Since you had good grades all year than you make those two bad grades at the end of the year like only eleven days till summer vacation can you fail? My mom said I can't cause I had good grades all year but my dad said I could. Can you please tell me or at least tell me what you think?

A. Generally no, unless your school has an odd set up. Most schools only consider an F failing, so you should be fine. If you're really worried, I'd suggest just talking to your teacher(s). You shouldn't fail the grade though.

A. The 3 sources listed have some lesson plans, rubrics, handouts, etc. Sixth graders are in a world of their own. They are still creative and enjoy arts and crafts but they also are beginning to get to that age where they want to be treated as an adolescent. Some quick ideas are: 1) Take a nursery story (like 3 Little Pigs) and have them rewrite a "modern" version. 2) Write a play based on their favorite TV character (a friend did this and ended up with about 20 different Sponge Bob stories) 3) Take a walk outside the school, if allowed, and have them list what they saw. Then upon returning have them write a poem putting everything together. 4) Have them draw a picture and then write a poem or story describing the picture. 5) Take… [cont.]

Should I become a regular 6th Grade teacher or a politician and why?
Q. I'm 14 and I really liked 6th Grade. The only thing is, I don't like severe down syndrome kids, I'm horrible at algebra, and I am horrible at disciplining. I love Politics. I want to make the United States a better place. But I do not want to become a lawyer because it's too much schooling. I cannot join the military because my corpus callosum is smaller than normal. I love writing children's books.

A. Lots of teachers aren't good at some subjects, such as algebra. If you decide to become a teacher, you will learn how to deal with kids who have disabilities. You should look into becoming a social worker or a school psychologist, although the latter will have you working with many kids with behavioral problems. But as I said, if you decide to become a teacher, you will learn how to discipline and manage a class.

A. build a Stirling engine. it takes a cup of hot water, some cardboard and or waxed paper, and a propeller. it uses the heat in the water to drive a simple lever arrangement to turn the propeller. it will turn quite fast with a good hot cup of water. it is also simple and quick to make. the plans are available almost anywhere. look it up on google or wikipedia.

So i went to Target and got this really cute and stylish backpack that was black with red hearts all over and it was huge. I like it alot better and i got many compliments on it throughout the year, trust me you want room. Make sure you have a binder and stuff and your textbooks will get bigger, and you will get more homework so you wont want the tiny tote. Hope i could help=) ~Pezz

what is a good 6th grade science project?
Q. I will be starting 6th grade on tuesday and on the last day of 5th grade our new middle school gave everyone a folder with a ton of homework in it. One part was a science project i looked on google but everything you have to pay to get info about it. The homework isn't the actual project but you have to do a bibliography worksheet so i need a really good topic that i need to research on. Thanks!

A. When I was in 5th grade I won 1st place out of the entire school with a science project I did on "Which battery lasts the longest." I went out and bought like 7 flashlights (the same ones) and I put different brands of batteries in each one. I labeled them and then I turned them on at night (for a few weeks) and I waited until each of them gave out. The one that lastest the longest for me wasn't actually the energizer bunny. It was Duracell. The generics gave out first...It was pretty interesting when I did it. Maybe you could have the same success. Good luck!
