A. The UN has said that the worse humanitarian crisis is in Somalia right now. Congo and Sudan are also in rather dire straits. See the UNDP Human Development Report, available for free online in various places, for country rankings regarding literacy, nutrition, AIDS, etc.

Q. Africa has been sought after for many different reasons in the past. How would a healthy and independent Africa benefit the world?
Asked by Adam R - Wed May 21 13:48:45 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. we could save our billions of aid dollars if their governments wasn't so corrupt. then we would not have to worry about feeding their poor starving children that they reproduce so numerously and cannot or will not care for them. also, if they would end slavery and free their innocents and recognize women's rights and quit making them breeding animals with no say over anything. then they and the whole world would benefit. they could share in their own wealth.

Q. I will be traveling to Ghana, Africa in May 2009 to assist in a health care setting. The problem is, the trip is going to cost about $4,000. Because I am a student, this is a bit of a problem for me. I am already planning on sending a letter to family and friends asking for their support; does anyone know of any grants or opportunities I could seek to help defray the cost?

Is the Continent of Africa, The Country to stay away from, or can I visit there to see the beginnings of time?
Q. I travel quite a bit, Africa is a Continent I have always wanted to visit. South Africa is more to my liking, but just like the United States, I would like to travel all over the country visiting the people, learning their culture, and language. I have visited Europe, and have enjoyed the many pleasant people, and their way of life. My next trip is to Ireland, and then hopefully to South Africa. Learning about other people and the way they live, love, and create is of much value to me as a human being. I have sommething to share, and I need to learn all I can about the Countries I visit. Knowing more about the Human Race, helps me to be a more compassionate person, and open to different things.

Asked by rodkihgf - Mon Sep 22 22:55:19 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Blaming it on colonization ignores the fact that diseases have always existed. I don't recall Diamond blaming disease on colonization. If he did, he would greatly reduce his credibility. Where he did mention it, it was about the white people not being able to take tropical diseases. The disease problem in Africa doesn't involve whites or colonists.

Why did the Dutch reformed church in south africa condone and support the cruel system of Apartheid?
Q. And why did it take almost 300 years for christian churches worldwide to finally speak out against the dutch reformed church of south africa and severing links with it ?

A. Apartheid was only around from 1948 onwards. Churches started speaking out about slavery in the 1700's but the concept of racial prejudice as something bad is fairly modern. Look at movies from the 1940's for example. blacks were generally portrayed as simple folk who needed a firm hand. In South Africa the Dutch Reformed Church was and maybe still is very much old testament orientated. In the OT laws, beliefs and concepts are very different from the NT, but in both time periods, slavery was common. The Bible is people's interpretation and memory of what God said or Jesus said as well as historical commentary and the sayings of prophets and disciples. You can find and interpret comments to justify almost anything somewhere or other in… [cont.]

Old musical instruments wanted for disadvantaged youngsters in South Africa?
Q. Here on the southern coast of South Africa we're trying to start a naval cadet corps to train disadvantaged youngsters of colour as prospective seamen. A cadet band is planned which will not only form part of the programme, but will also perform during public marches and at various functions. This will hugely assist the fund raising effort. 5 Trumpets, 15 bugles, 5 side drums, 2 tenor drums and a bass drum are required. Does anyone know where I could find willing donors?

A. Try checking with UNICEF for a reputable NGO that you can send to. There are a lot of unethical people that would gladly take your money, so you need to be sure that you aren't paying for someone's swimming pool. Also, some adoption agencies that work in Africa have programs to sponser children as well.

How did the French imperialism of North and West Africa affect both areas?
Q. I am doing a project on French imperialism in North and West Africa and we need to know things about France such as: reasons for desire to control the area, method of establishing control, advantages/disadvantages that resulted from this take over, and the overall outcome in relation to France. Also, we need information about the conquered areas such as: changes that were made and benefits (or lack of) received. I am having some trouble finding information so any help would be great. A good website would even help.
Asked by Ro - Sun Jan 20 17:14:32 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Alexis B is quite wrong. French imperialism affected North and West Africa in many ways. (and not because my mom told them to either, quite frankly she wasn't alive then) Mainly though, there was a poor outcome so any good that might have happened, was eventually reversed by the African territories declaring their freedom.
