Do you know of any good summer programs in Alabama or nearby for a high school junior?
Q. I am currently a junior in high school. I would really like to attend a summer program of some sort this coming summer (2010). I have been looking in to the Capstone Summer Honors Program at Alabama and it looks really good. Does anyone have any suggestions for other programs, or opinions on this program? I am also open to any suggestions on internship programs offered in Alabama or nearby states (preferably something in the medical field). Thanks. Website links are appreciated too.

Is there any truth to the Alabama stereotypes?
Q. I'm from Toronto, Canada and I'm considering attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham. It seems like a good university and has the majors I'm interested in and Birmingham looks like a nice city, but I can't help but think about the stereotypes of Alabama. Is it true that the majority of people in Alabama are conservative Christians, and is it true that there is still a lot of noticeable racial tension in Alabama? I know that most stereotypes are usually false, but so many people say that Alabama is the real deal when it comes to stereotypes of the south. Is it really as bad as people make it out to be?

A. We moved here from Chicago five years ago. When I flew down for my interview, my wife practically had to be forced onto the plane at gunpoint. Now I wouldn't be able to get her to leave. Dispense with all the cliches. Birmingham is a great city with lots of entertainment (an astonishingly good music scene, if that's your deal), amazingly good restaurants, and a generally fun atmosphere. Plus, if you go out of your way to make friends (which is what you should do in any move, but in the South its particularly important), you'll have a great stay here. The race thing just doesn't seem to be much of an issue in Birmingham, at least no more than any other major city. In fact, I see far less overt racism here than I witnessed in Chicago. … [cont.]

A. Well, Frankfort, KY to Huntsville, AL (one of the northernmost cities in Alabama is 318.89 miles, 5 hrs 11 mins. If it's going to be such an awful trip then don't go. No one says you have to participate in extracurricular activities. And before you make a decision whether to stay or go you should have all the details.

what are the best conditions for a mini banana plant in alabama?
Q. i live in alabama and have recently obtained 5 miniature banana plants. they range from 1 inch tall to 2.5 feet tall. I am unsure whether or not to put them each in a pot so they can come indoors for winter or if i should put them in the ground. i understand that they get rather tall and that they need a lot of nutrients and sun but i am most concerned with the planting or potting issue. If they need to be in a pot, what size?

A. Derek I too live in Lower Alabama,,, I have several banana trees as part of my outside landscape. They do very well here, they love sunny spots. The trees wither in the winter but, they have several spouts from the same root that grows back. Now due to our climate I wouldn't expect the fruit to mature enough to eat. Good luck

What is the legal age to rent a hotel room in Alabama?
Q. I am having to get a place to stay while visiting a college by myself. I am eighteen, which is fine in most states, but the age of majority in Alabama is 19. Does that mean I cannot rent a room until then as well?
Asked by holdy_bear - Mon Jul 7 16:05:05 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I used to work in hotels and the legal age to rent a room is 18. However hotel chains can set their own minimum age requirements. There are a lot of hotels (mainly major chains and in places like Myrtle Beach) that will require you to be 21. Most hotels will require a major credit card for the reservation and for the deposit during your stay. do not use your debit card!!! Here is why, you can pay with cash even though you used the credit card for your reservation and your deposit however they pre-authorize the card and put a hold on the amount of the stay and the deposit. They do not charge the card however the bank/credit card company will hold that amount and you cannot spend the money. If you use your debit card that could… [cont.]

Where can I find a good recording of an Alabama accent?
Q. My son is playing Dill in a production of "To Kill A Mockingbird" and we need to find some Alabama dialogue tapes/CD's. Any clue as to where to find them? We're from West Texas, so I know the Alabama accent is drawn out a bit more and is not as harsh as a Texan accent.
Asked by Counselor - Fri Mar 30 21:11:21 2007 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most Southern accents in movies are so overdone. Being a Southerner I find the accents very broad and somewhat offensive. Here's my view: The Southern accent is not so very different. We do tend to relax our vowel sounds with lots of dipthongs! A first step wold be to take it nice and slow. Some of the best Southern accents were used in the old Andy Griffith tv series. Most of the actors were Southerners and while the show is a comedy, the characters are very real. If you can a find a video of the stage play greater tuna, the two actors - Joe Sears and Jaston Williams - each play a variety of characters and are dead on the nose! Best of luck!

A. Well, a lot depends on what you really value in life, and where you or your significant other will be working. However, let me give you my best advice: if you are single/Married without kids: If you like a diverse lifestyle, with an eclectic mix of people, entertainment options, great restaurants, exposure to the arts, etc., then Birmingham's Southside (especially Forest Park) will be ideal for you, along with Homewood and Mountain Brook. if you have kids: You really want to be in a good school system. If so, then you want to be (in order) Mountain Brook, Vestavia, Hoover, and Homewood. Of these four communities, Hoover is the most affordable of all. But Mountain Brook, with one of the country's Top 20 school systems, is actually more… [cont.]

Is it legal to own a handgun under 21 in Alabama?
Q. I know in many states as long as you are 18 you can buy a pistol from private seller or recieve one as a gift. What are the laws in Alabama? I am 20 and my father is willing to give me one if it is legal, but he does live in another state.
Asked by Anthony D - Thu Dec 4 17:44:56 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There is no age requirement for a parent giving a handgun to their kid so the age is not a problem. The problem in your case is that your Father lives in another state. In order for him to legallyt transfer the gun to you, it must go to an FFL holder in your state. The problem comes in because you have to be 21 in order to pick it up from the FFL holder. That's the way the law says it has to be done. In reality, if your father just gave you the gun, there would not be a problem unless you did something stupid with it. If you don't advertise the fact, no one is going to notice.
