How to reinforce good behavior in my heeler?
Q. My heeler is very smart, but very rambunctious. I just spent the last half hour trying to reinforce good behavior and ignoring bad behavior but she just gets so excited. She can sit/stay/lay, but when she's hyper or sees something she wants she goes to get it and I have to tell her the command all over. I can't just say "sit" I have to say it very loud and firmly. Any ideas?

A. If you are in middle of training session quit while you are in sucess mode. If you are not in the middle of training then try to take outside for a walk and wear her down a little. Start working with the command sit over and over and over (like during tv commercials). When she is wound up try calming her down with some long smooth strokes on the chest or back. Don't pet fast etc. REad up on calming a dog (google it) or massaging a dog. There is a method called T touch for horses and I am not sure but there might be wrwiting on that for dogs as well. I have a blog feel free to make suggestions and check back.

What is a specific behavior acquired as a result of social learning?
Q. Need ideas for a project for my psychology class - need to study a behavior I believe to have been acquired as a result of social learning. Help? Also, I have to conduct the experiment using naturalistic methods of observation - does that mean "people watching" or observing them in their natural surroundings?
Asked by sarahdavis2007 - Tue Jan 15 17:23:00 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Social learning is a theory that explains how people learn behavior. so basically anything that someone does, from swearing or hitting, to saying please and thank you everytime, they've probably learned from the people around them or that they grew up with. but it's not always true. like, not everyone that was raised in a bad neighborhood where there was a lot of crime will become a criminal. basically its what we've "learned" from "society" around us.

How to Build a Dog Bad Behavior Stopper for Pennies?
Q. I've heard that you can stop bad behavior in dogs by shaking pennies. But, what do I put the pennies into? Does this actually work? Has anyone ever tried this?
Asked by Aleasha C - Mon Jul 7 08:12:16 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Unless you have a very noise sensitive dog, generally this type of 'training' does not work. The basis behind the pennies in a can is to throw them off guard and stop them from displaying a particular behaviour at that moment in time. It may startle them at first, but tends to lose its effectiveness after a couple of times when they realize that the noise is the only consequence for their behaviour. A much BETTER way to deal with the situation is to verbally correct them and then re-direct their attention onto an object or behaviour that IS acceptable.

What is the difference between the behavior of a freshmen and a sophomore?
Q. I don't see a big difference in the way a freshmen behaves and the way a sophomore does. a friend of mine is a soph and was told she acts like a freshmen...is this just some desperate attempt for kids to come up with even more labels for people...so yeah...whats the differnece in behavior of a fresh and a soph?
Asked by system error - Tue Jan 22 20:36:41 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There is no difference. It just depends on what freshmen/sophomores you're comparing. I'm a freshman, and I'm dating a sophomore...so I guess you could say for us, we behave the same. Neither of us are more or less mature than the other. I hate the way high school stereotypes freshmen the most...but it' s just a way of life.

What behavior does a dwarf gourami show before making a bubble nest/mating?
Q. i have a male dwarf gourami and today i noticed his was hanging out at the top of the tank with his mouth touching the surface. he is perfectly fine and breaths and everything normal. he even sometimes spits out water. is this pre-spawning behavior?
Asked by toastyman14 - Mon Apr 7 15:45:14 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No, it is not pre-spawning behavior. Here is a little info on gourami breeding. :) The wild Dwarf Gourami has a minimum population doubling time between 1.4 and 4.4 years, and the species is therefore considered medium resilient towards over fishing and other potential threats. It is not included in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. You can breed Dwarf Gourami in captivity if you are prepared to coax your fish a little to induce breeding. Sexing Dwarf Gourami is easy since healthy, mature males are extremely colourful while the females have a much duller colouration. Dwarf Gouramis build bubblenest and currents are therefore not recommended in the aquarium since they may disturb or damage the nest. The nests are very beautiful… [cont.]

He has a daily behavior log from the teacher and has had no "sad face" days in over 3 weeks now. We praise him verbally daily and I've taken him to the park and McDonald's, but I'd like to do a little bit more this weekend. Any ideas? These are GREAT ideas. Thanks to all of you.

A. Why not ask your son? I only have daughters, so I'm not sure what to reward a boy with. My daughter gets Bella Sara trading cards every day that she comes home with perfect papers...it gives her an incentive to try her best. I would ask him what he would like. Just let him know that you think he's been doing an awesome job and would like to reward him, but you thought this time you would let him pick his own reward. It makes them feel important when you show you trust them enough to make their own decisions. Make sure to tell him to keep it within reason though! Good luck!

A. Hello - I am a sociology professor and I think approaching this question from the different sociological perspectives (rather than starting with the definition) is the easiest way to answer this for your paper. So first pick the perspective you feel the most comfortable with: how about behaviorism? (that is human behavior is defined by conditioned learning) or symbolic interactionism (human behavior is driven by the day to day interactions between individuals that construct the meaning of all interactions) or conflict theory (human behavior is defined by the competition over limited resources) or functionalism (human behavior is defined by social integration - people coming together and structuring interactions for the benefit of the… [cont.]

How can I change the attitude or behavior of a cat is she's already six months?
Q. Just 2 days ago, we bought a persian cat who's already 6 months. Of course we thought that she has breeding but we are so surprised that she has the behavior of a stray cat. She pees and poo everywhere, as in literally everywhere, she goes to the table that is so high and find food (we feed her every now and then) she just wants to do that. Please help me, she's not like my other cat who has everything I wanted for in a cat. Thanks!
Asked by lifeofadisarmed - Fri Jul 18 21:23:34 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Where did you buy this cat from? I can guess - you probably bought her from a pet store or from a backyard breeder. Kittens and cats sold by reputable breeders are well socialized. Kittens and cats found at pet stores or from backyard breeders tend to be kept in cages and get little to no human interaction. So tell me - am I correct? Not sure what you mean by "thought she has breeding". What does that mean? Were you given papers to show that she's a purebred cat or did someone just SAY she is? Did you interact with the cat before you brought it home or did you just go somewhere and pick it up without interacting with it? Has a vet checked out this new cat and did you keep it separate from your existing cat when you first got it? … [cont.]

A. The best example of unethical behavior is the current situation with the Governor of Illinois trying to sell the senate seat vacated by Barack Obama, How is it that Blagojevich can have a PRIVATE attorney in the Illinois House proceeding for articles of Impeachment?! That is the problem with Blago he treats the Governorship as his private office. Genson should be disqualified from representing Blago in the criminal trial now because of the conflict of interest presented by being the public official representative of Blago in the House proceeding. To put this point more bluntly: Blago s official role defending against impeachment could include actions designed to cover-up offenses related to the criminal charges. Why do people give dog behavior advice over the internet?
Q. On this site and many others I see average laypeople trying to give advice on how to address aggression, fear and shyness and other behavior problems. What worked on your dog or what you saw on tv is relevent to that specific situation and does not apply to every dog or every situation. Behavior problems should be evaluated and addressed on an individual basis by a professional. The wrong advice will make problems worse or create a problem that was not previously there. Dog owners should first contact their local SPCA or shelter for recommendations on local trainers and behavior consultants (some shelters have in-house consultants who offer behavior services - some of the top behavior specialists in the country work for shelters). … [cont.]

A. I agree with you. And, for the most part I do see that the better answers tell the person to take the dog to the vet or to enroll in obedience classes or search for a dog behaviorist. On the other hand, the average American dog owner will not even spend the money to put their dog through a beginner dog training class. They don't spend the time to socialize the dog. Then when the dog has behavior problems the solution most the time is dumping it in a shelter or giving it away. So, if some free advise on the Internet can get these folks to maybe try something suggested and maybe see some improvement and then maybe they will enroll the dog in a class or phone the SPCA and ask about a consultation with a behaviorist. I'd like to see… [cont.]

What is the cause of this cat behavior and how may I correct it?

A. My response is a bit out-of-the-box, but it sounds like your cat is a bit obsessive about getting out, even for an indoor cat: Out of curiosity, has he been fixed? If not, he may be smelling (perhaps more than one) girl kitty in heat, and that's likely driving his urge to get out. If he hasn't been fixed, he needs to be immediately: his behavior will only worsen over time (including much more undesirable things like spraying). If he has been fixed, and other behavior modification suggestions don't work, consider the possibility that his neutering wasn't quite complete (occasionally a rescinded testicle misses the vet's knife). Get him checked by a second vet to see if this might have happened. If he was recently fixed (~3mo), he… [cont.]

What is a science of behavior in the following passage?
Q. Human behavior is also predictable in light of the environment within which it occurs. It is not as absolutely predictable as is the case with chemical reactions, gravitational phenomena, and heavenly bodies in space, but it is predictable enough for us to know generally what will happen under given conditions.
