Q. Please be specific, there are different versions of bilingual education.

A. No. In our country's history everyone has had to learn English. And, by bilingual, are you talking about spanish, vietnamese, korean, portuguese? See what I'm getting at? We can't teach everyone in their home language. everyone must learn english so we can communicate amongst ourselves.

A. I guess it would depend if you are for or against bilingual education. If you are for it, you could say that it helps prepare students for viable employment in an ever globalizing world.

DO you even know what BiLINGUAL EDUCATION MEANS?
Q. It means that you go to an American School but you are taught in your "native language" mostly spanish. Why should we have that? Why can't classes be taught in English/ Didn't that work for previous generations? Were classes in Italian neighborhoods taught in Italian? So knee jerk liberals, we are not talking about langauge learning but Bilingual education.

I NEED 10 strong reasons why we should get rid of Bilingual Education?
Q. I'm having a classroom debate and I absolutely need at least a minute of clear statement giving my 10 strong reasons as to why we need to get rid of Bilingual Education here in America. Please I need your help people! I'd really appreciate your response. Many thanks in advance:)

A. Bilingual education promotes the isolation of the people who must learn English by grouping them with other non-english speaking people. The fastest way to learn a language is by total immersion. I read something on this many years ago about russian sailors that were placed on an American ship and only English was spoken, in fact I belive that they could not speak with each other in their native language, if I remember correctly with in about 10 days they had learned the fundamentals of English. Of course this reading was done pre-internet and I can't find a reference to this but total immersion is the way to go. BTW: I am in no way saying that Americans should not learn a 2nd language.

A. I think a good way would be to get members of your class who have gone to school in other parts of the world and speak a different language to share there experences with you ahead of time then the day of the presentaion get them involved by asking questions you know they can answer. For your visual aid you should have samples of writing from different languages. Like write a sentence in english and then do that same sentence in other language. I hope that help a little and good luck.

A. Having students learn two languages is great, no matter what the second language is - I'm all for it. Hell, if you can get them trilingual, do it. Every language that someone can converse in opens the doors to perhaps a job that would have never been possible, or come in handy in a certain situation. My sister is quadrilingual, I'm trilingual. One of my proudest moments of hers was when she was when she called Cuba and conversed in Spanish, tracking down my aunt who was vacationing there in order to tell her that her father passed away. If it wasn't for my sister and the Spanish she new, my aunt could have missed the funeral. On another note though, the best time to make someone learn a language is when they're young. Should bilingual education be an option?
Q. Like English and Spanish or English and Mandarin? I think it should be an option. The way it's set up right now, education does not really give you an option to learn another language. It would make people more employable. Learning two languages would make people more employable.

A. I think there must be more to this question than you wrote here, because I don't see how you can compare these. Bilingual Education is teaching students content areas (language, math, science, history, etc.) in two languages simultaneously. It is usually NOT done by translation, such as teaching in English followed directly by a Spanish translation. Either some subjects are taught in one language, and some in the other (all math and history in English, all science and another subject in Spanish), OR all subjects are taught in both langauges, but on alternate days (today all lessons will be in Spanish, tomorrow they will all be taught in English). A. It's still a very open question. There are loads of connexions, related to identity (on social, academic, cultural or ethnic grounds), motivation, etc. Some bilingual people have been reported to change their personality when they 'switch' from one language to another, which isn't 'bad' or 'good' per se, but a noteworthy detail IMO.

However, that is not happening. The fact of the matter is, so many of our students come to our schools unable to speak English, and teaching our first language should be the priority. Most school districts do not teach a variety of languages, but possible 3 at the most. Most public schools have adopted extremely poor curriculum, for teaching languages, which makes it almost impossible. Bilingual education is a joke, right?
Q. I am an immigrant to this country. I came at a time when there was no bilingual education. I was speaking English within a year, without any special programs. Now, I have worked as a teacher, and I have seen kids stay in bilingual education programs for years and years and still not know how to speak English. When are we going to realize that bilingua education is doing a disservice to our kids. That it is actually hindering them from learning English, and that it's just falied program that has to be done away with.

A. Yes, I agree. It makes them move at a slower pace. The best way to learn a language is to be around other people who speak the language constantly. You will learn it much faster! You come to America, you learn English the SAME way Americans do. Oh, and I think you people are misinterpreting his question. He's not saying that immigrants shouldn't learn English...He's saying that they shouldn't be in special programs--that they should learn the same way we do. Calm down, everyone. And learn to read properly.
