A wave is a disturbance that propagates through space and time, usually with transference of energy. A mechanical wave is a wave that propagates or travels through a medium due to the restoring forces it produces upon deformation. There also exist waves capable of traveling through a vacuum, including electromagnetic radiation and probably gravitational radiation. Waves travel and transfer energy from one point to another, often with no permanent displacement of the particles of the medium (that is, with little or no associated mass transport); they consist instead of oscillations or vibrations around almost fixed locations.

How does Electromagnetic Waves carry energy without a medium?
Q. Mechanical waves carry energy by "disturbing" particles of the medium. But since EM waves does not require a medium, how does it carry energy?
Asked by c-major - Sun Jan 27 05:15:28 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Electromagnetic waves do not function in much the same way as mechanical waves... In 1922 Louis de Broglie wrote a paper detailing his idea of "wave-particle duality", simply this means that particles can exhibit particle AND wave behaviour, and waves can exhibit wave AND particle behaviour. Because of this, they do not require a medium to travel through, so they can permeate a vacuum.

How is it possible for surfers to find and ride waves over 50 feet?
Q. Waves about 60 to 80 feet are extremely large. And to my knowledge, only last decade did science figure out that waves that large actually exist. If their are places where waves 60-100 feet regularly come into play such as Hawaii and others, then how is it scientists ever thought a wave that large only came once every ten thousand years?

How do you get beach waves with synthetic braids?
Q. I want beach waves, but i have braids, and heat from an iron melts the hair.
Asked by Pretty'n'Pink - Sun May 13 19:24:01 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Wet the hair and put it in rollers or very tight curlers and wait for it to dry. You can also braid hair when its wet and open it up. Synthetic hair is not made to be styled with heat. You need to use products specially formulated for synthetic hair. Above all, do not open an oven with synthetic hair or the heat will rush out and ruin it.
