How does the chaos game for generating fractals work?
Q. The description I read goes as follows: for the case of a sierpinkski triangle, start with a triangle, then pick a point at random inside the triangle, and PLOT the point half way between that random point and a vertice (chosen at random) apparently, repeating this process indefinitely causes the sierpinski triangle to emerge after awhile. I don't see how this can possibly be the case. I can pick many points inside the original triangle and corresponding vertices that would NOT be plotted in the sierpinski triangle (aka, the midpoint ends up being in a space where there SHOULD be empty "triangle space") so what gives. apparently the explanation of the chaos game algorithm is wrong. so how does the chaos game really work?

A. I believe if you choose random points, then there is a very high probability that you get a fractal. You won't get exactly one of the deterministic fractals, but you will get something similar.

whats new and exciting in maths?
Q. I am a complete mathematics dunbo but I love the stories like feeding that simultaneous quadratic equation back into itself and creating fractals and chaos. I love it when maths stops being predictable - is this at the edge of maths and physics disciplines ? - I dont understand it but I love the stories are there any new ones?

A. There's a ton of really exciting stuff out there! This is a really great time to be a mathematician, perhaps even one of the best times in history (though it just keeps getting better and better). Unfortunately a lot of the really cutting edge stuff is so mind-numbingly technical that you need a PhD in mathematics just to understand the basic questions that people are working on. But there are a couple of things that happened pretty recently which are easier to sink your teeth into. Primes in arithmetic progression: An arithmetic progression is a sequence of integers a1, a2, a3,..., an whose differences are all equal to the same number d; a2 - a1 = d, a3 - a2 = d,..., an - a(n-1) = d. The length of an arithmetic progression is simply… [cont.]

how does the chaos theory relate to fractal geometry??
Q. please give as many examples as you can to better my understanding!!

A. Hi there - This is SUCH a cool question! I love fractals and chaos theory - I think it is very interesting. Years ago, I did part of my masters thesis on fractal dimension. I've gone to the web and found one very cool website that illustrates quite a bit about chaos & fractals. Your question is sort of like asking how is arithmetic related to algebra - they are so interrelated, it's hard to describe one without the other. Chaos theory began with fractal geometry. One of my all time favorite books about chaos and fractals is called: Chaos: Making a New Science by James Gleick. It's been around for years and is still widely read. There's also a very cool video (again made years ago, so I'm not sure it's still available)… [cont.]
