What is the chemical formula of an eggshell?
Q. I need to know the chemical formula of an eggshell and for acetic acid. Also what the balance formula is.
Asked by Foxy - Tue Sep 5 17:29:27 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The acetic acid has the empirical formula CH2O and the molecular formula C2H4O2. The eggshell is largely crystalline calcium carbonate. Chemical formula: CCaO3. To balance the equation, we must ensure that the sum of the atomic numbers on each side of the equations are equal (required by the conservation law of electric charge), and that the sum of the atomic masses on each side are also equal (required by the law of conservation of baryon number).

What is the chemical formula in the fruit battery experiment?
Q. I need to know what the chemical formula in the fruit battery when the light is turn on. The material I using are: lemon, copper wire, copper nail, zinc nail, and light bulb, just in case.
Asked by Bender - Sat Jan 31 15:25:16 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I don't remember the exact reduction potentials, but I'm pretty sure the zinc will get oxidized, and the copper nail will be providing electrons to protons (H+ from the acidic lemon), causing them to form hydrogen gas. I would look it up, though, because that's just a rough guess.

What is the chemical formula of aluminum reacting with oxygen?
Q. I know aluminum has 3 valence electrons and oxygen has 7, but if anyone could explain the chemical formula to me it would be great.
Asked by William - Thu Dec 4 17:54:19 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The chemical formula of aluminium oxide is Al2O3 An aluminium ion has a 3+ charge, because it loses 3 electrons when it reacts. An oxygen ion has a 2- charge, because it gains 2 electrons when it reacts. In aluminium oxide, the charges of the ions need to cancel out. So... 2 aluminium ions --> 6+ total charge , 3 oxygen ions --> 6- total charge The charges cancel out.

What is the chemical formula of Calciumate?
Q. I'm making a crossword puzzle for a chemistry class and Calciumate seems to be the only chemistry-related term that fits. I need to create a clue for it. The chemical formula would be best, but if you can think of a specific clue for it, please use that too.
Asked by Neostar - Thu Apr 24 01:02:01 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Calciumate isn't a molecule, sorry. It's a "named" word to describe biospheric homeostasis. If you still want to use it, you can read this article. Additionally, if you want a hand coming up with more words, I'd like to help if you post the question. My favorite two hobbies are chemistry and crossword puzzles. (I'm quite a geek.)

Q. Myodil (UK) and Pantopaque (USA) was an old oil based contrast medium that was used in x-ray. However, the Chemical formula was different. What are those differences? And how would such differences react within the CSF of the body and through daughtering. Thank you.
Asked by DEREKM - Wed Jun 27 09:39:09 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Myodil and Pantopaque were exactly the same product, just named differently. The chemical formula is C19H29IO2, with the IUPAC name is ethyl 10-(2-iodophenyl)undecano ate. Structure picture can be found here : Iophendylate is a myelographic oil-ester initially introduced for use in small amounts (1-2cc) for locating spinal tumors. Later, it was found to cause adhesive arachnoiditis. Because these substances are hyperbaric once they were placed in the subarachnoid space they would migrate to the distal portion, where they remained, producing progressive scarring.

A. Wool and silk are made up of amino acids strung together in a protein. There is no definite chemical formula. Nylon is of two kinds. The first is a polyamide of adipic acid and hexamethylenediamine: -(CO-CH2CH2CH2CH2CO.NHCH2 CH2CH2CH2CH2C... The second is from aminocaproic acid: -(NHCH2CH2CH2CH2CO-)x- Some threads are made of cotton or rayon. These are made of polymers of glucose in a particular chemical bonding to make cellulose. Other threads are polyester. This is a polymer of terephthalic acid, HOOC-C6H4-COOH, and ethylene glycol, HO-CH2CH2-OH. Still yet other threads are acrylic, made from polyacrylonitrile, -[CH2CH2(CN)-]x-

Why is the chemical formula for calcium sulfate dihydrate so odd?
Q. The chemical formula for this substance is CaSO4.2(H2O) . But I've never seen a chemical formula with that little DOT between CaSO4 and 2(H2O). What does the dot mean?
Asked by Kikicool1 - Sat Jun 20 08:37:20 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The chemical formula for calcium sulphate dihydrate, CaSO4.2(H2O) , tells you that there are TWO molecules of water associated with every molecule of calcium sulphate in the crystal lattice. This water is called water of crystallisation . The use of parenthesis is optional. [Water of crystallization is water that occurs in crystals but is not covalently bonded to a host molecule or ion.] A salt with associated water of crystallization is known as a HYDRATE. Historically, the structures of many hydrates were unknown, and the dot in the formula of a hydrate was employed to specify the composition without indicating how the water is bound. Examples: CuSO4 5H2O - copper (II) sulfate pentahydrate CoCI2 6H2O - cobalt (II) chloride… [cont.]
