A. since it is an ionic compound.. a cation (positive) calcium (Ca) plus an anion (negative) phosphate (PO4).. calcium having a net charge of +2 and phosphate with -3 so do the criss cross and their charges shall be interchanged as subscript.. it shall be Ca3(PO4)2 there are just 3 element concerned, it is calcium, phosphorus and oxygen.. formula mass is calculated is this way Ca=40(atomic mass) x 3 (subscript) = 120 P= 31 x 2 (since 2 is distributed to both oxygen and phosphorus and the original subcript of P is 1 so 1x2=2)=62 and for O = 16 x 8 (since 2 is distributed as stated) = 128 and add all the products 120+62+128=? you'll get 310 and the unit is a.m.u or atomic mass unit

A. H3PO4 + Ca(OH)2 --> CaPO4 + H2O Phosphoric acid reacts with calcium hydroxide to produce calcium phosphate and water. That's basically how you do it. Take the chemical formula for the words and put it in the problem. Just remember, reacts with= add (and is also included in this) to produce= ---> (an arrow), yields also means an arrow, too.

A. Anything with a d^10 configuration at the end will indicate a noble gas because all 5 orbitals have been filled with electrons (2 per orbital). Examples for #2... O2(g), H2(g), H2O(s/l/g) (numbers indicate subscripts) Lower right. Ca3(PO4)2 (numbers indicate subscripts) All of these problems should be easily done without much hassle. If you're having problems, seek help from your instructor or get help from a tutor or friend.

A. 1. Potassium nitride The cation is Potassium, symbol K , Atomic number 19 It is a Gr-1 metal, that means it can loose 1electron to form the corresponding Potassium ion with 1positive charge K(+1), That means Potassium has now 11protons and 10 electrons. On the other hand Nitrogen, Symbol N, Atomic number 7 It requires 3 electrons to fill in the outermost shell to acquire nearest inert gas configuration of Neon (At. no. 10) So it needs three electrons to fill it, which can be supplied by 3 potassium atoms (one each), i.e. 3K ---> 3K (+1) + 3e (-) And N + 3e (-) ---> N (-3) Finally, 3K (+1) + N (-3) ---> K3N1 or K3N Now three potassium atoms have got 3x(+1) = 3(+) charge and One nitrogen has 1x (-3) = 3 (-) charge, So total… [cont.]

A. 1) the cation is named first, followed by the anion. When naming ionic compounds, change the ending of the anions to -ide instead of -ine. 2) Roman numerals are appropriate when naming compounds that contain transition metals to indicate their charge. 3)The numerical subscript refers to the number of atoms in that compound. 4)the subscript following parentheses refers to the number of polyatomic ions the compound contains. 5) when writing the formula for an ionic compound, multiply each charge by the number of atoms that will balance the charge of both ions. Normally just reversing them and using them as subscripts work fine. chemical formulas: Pb(No3) NaCH3COO NH4Cl Na3PO4 Ca(OH)2 SnCl4 KBr Calcium chloride Iron (II) chloride Sodium… [cont.]

Q. 1) name some simple rules for naming an ionic compound 2) when is it appropriate to use roman numerals in naming compounds? 3)What does a numerical subscript following an element in a chemical formula mean? 4) what does a numerical subscript following a set of parentheses in a chemical formula mean? 5) write some simple rules for writing the formula for an ionic compound -I need to know the chemical formulas for: lead (II) nitrate sodium acetate ammonium chloride sodium phosphate calcium hydroxide tin (IV) chloride potassium bromide and then the name of: CaCl2 FeCl2 Na2HPO4 NaH2PO4 Thank you sooo much!!!

Chemistry simple questions urgent!?
Q. 1. When they say that a compound is copper (II) oxide, then what does the (II) stand for? 2. When you are asked to construct your own chemical equation for certain substances they give you in words (e.g. copper sulphate reacts with calcium phosphate to produce water and ...), is is it easier to just memorize the chemical formula of the substances or refer to the periodic table and find out how many valence electrons each element has and find out how many of each are needed to make the compound neutral? (e.g Ca3P2)?? I'm really so confused and my exam's tomorrow.

A. 1. The amount of valence electrons. ie. 2 valence electrons in this case. Thus, copper (II) oxide will be CuO. 2. What I do is memorise all the +1, -1, +3 and -3 substances, and those that don't fit in those categories must therefore be either +2 or -2 (which you can work out using your periodic table).
