A. No one is going your homework for you. And if you stick by that mentality, you'll never learn. But anyhow, since you don't understand how to do these problems, I'll show you how do to the first one. They're all the same kind of problem. 1)What is the chemical formula for iron(III) sulphide? So, it says iron(III) that means they're using iron with a combining capacity of +3, since it specifically says that. Sulfide, if you don't know the combining capacity for sulfide, look for it in the periodic table as sulfur -- it's -2. Iron(III) = Fe and it's +3 Sulfur = S and it's -2 Cross the combining capacities. and you get Fe2S3 (the numbers as a subscript). It's very easy. Oh, and if you don't know what carbonate, sulfate, "-ate", etc..you [cont.]

Chemical Formula Name of Compound Type of Compound?
Q. Hi! I need to know if I'm right on this for an upcoming test this Thursday! I'm given the chemical formula and have to know the rest, would you let me know if I'm right or not on this stuff? The professor said not to use any prefixes or ite's or ate's for this test. Thanks in advance!! NaF = I think it is Sodium Floride and it is an Ionic Compound C3H8 = propane and is Covalent BaCl2 = Barium diChloride and is Ionic Ba3P2 = Barium diphosphide and is Ionic NaO2 = Sodium Oxide and is covalent P8I3 = Phosphorous Iodide and is Covalent NH3 = Nitrogen Hydride and is Covalent Na2S = Sodium Sulfide and is ionic Now for this next set he gave us the Name of the compound and I have to figure out the chemical formula and the type of compound.… [cont.]

A. BaCl2 is barium chloride. you're right when you said that this was ionic. The only time you can use the prefixes is when the compound is covalent. Ba3P2 is barium phosphide. it really is ionic. NaO2 is sodium superoxide. the superoxide ion exists as O2-. this is an ionic compound. P8I3 is octaphosphorus triiodide. the name is such because there are 8 phosphorus atoms. you use the prefix octa- if there are 8 atoms. there are 3 iodine atoms, so use the prefix tri-. the formula is covalent. NH3 is ammonia. you got the last number right. for the next set... the formula for sodium oxide is wrong. it should be Na2O. Recall that sodium has a +1 charge and oxide has a -2 charge. this is an ionic compound. an ionic compound has a metal… [cont.]

writing chemical formulas...HELP!!?
Q. Im really having trouble with these, I dont get the it?? Can anyone help me? 1) potassium nitride, K is a +1 and N is -3 Dont i need a positive 3 charge in K to balance the -3? If so will my answer be: K3N or is it K2N cause I already have a +1 charge on K and i need 2 more to balance with the N? 2) Calcium phosphide, C +2charge, P -3charge How would i balance this and write the formula? 3) Iron (II) Phosphate, Phosphate -3 charge? How would i write this formula? 4) Magnesium Nitride, Mg +2 , N -3 ?

A. 1. Potassium nitride The cation is Potassium, symbol K , Atomic number 19 It is a Gr-1 metal, that means it can loose 1electron to form the corresponding Potassium ion with 1positive charge K(+1), That means Potassium has now 11protons and 10 electrons. On the other hand Nitrogen, Symbol N, Atomic number 7 It requires 3 electrons to fill in the outermost shell to acquire nearest inert gas configuration of Neon (At. no. 10) So it needs three electrons to fill it, which can be supplied by 3 potassium atoms (one each), i.e. 3K ---> 3K (+1) + 3e (-) And N + 3e (-) ---> N (-3) Finally, 3K (+1) + N (-3) ---> K3N1 or K3N Now three potassium atoms have got 3x(+1) = 3(+) charge and One nitrogen has 1x (-3) = 3 (-) charge, So total… [cont.]

A. Well you first name the cation and then the anion. Also you write the cation charge in roman numerals in brackets right after the cation. Ex - CaS : Calcium (11) Sulphide CoBr3 : Cobalt (III) Bromide Aluminium nitrate : Al ( NO3)3 Bascically you should know the charges of most common ions to write the compound name and formula. Try some of your school text books to get a hang of the valency of each ion.
