Q. What is the chemical formula for sulfuric acid and magnesium ribbon?
Asked by sydbid11 - Fri Nov 28 12:13:24 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. sulfuric acid:H2SO4 magnesium: Mg Therefore it is a single displacement. Mg is a a metal, it will replace hydrogen. We know that Mg has a charge of +2, H a charage of -1 + SO4 has a charge of -2 Mg-2 just becomes Mg H and SO4 is a compound therefore if you learned in chemistry, it is H2 (SO4)1 or simply H2 SO4 Mg + H2 SO4 -> MgSO4 +H2 Then to balance it: teh equation is already balanced because Mg and So4 both have a charge of +2 or -2 and it cancel each other out. there for teh reactants is equal to your product. :] Mg + H2 SO4 -> MgSO4 +H2 (the numbers are subscripts)

Q. Please explain how to write a balanced chemical equation for sulfuric acid reacting with calcium hydroxide. (proper formula with correct charges, criss-cross-reduce)
Asked by Kelli Renee - Wed Mar 25 22:28:20 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This is a double replacement chemical equation, or one where you will have to switch out the metals. Let me clarify. Sulfuric acid is written as H2SO4. In acids, hydrogen usually acts as a metal, therefore making this something we can treat as an ionic compound. CaOH, or calcium hydroxide, is also an ionic compound. Your reactant (left) side of the equation should therefore read: H2SO4 + CaOH Now let's move to the right (product) side. As I said before, this is a double replacement problem, where the metals are switched. Because hydrogen is acting as a metal, you can switch it with calcium, thus making: H2O (or HOH) and Ca2SO4. With me so far? Here is your **unbalanced** equation: H2SO4 + CaOH --> (yields) H20 + Ca2SO4 Now, to balance. … [cont.]

Question about chemical equations/formulas?
Q. Sulfuric acid is written as H2SO4. Yet in ionic form it is written as 2H+ and SO2- What I don't understand is why the subscript 2 in H2 beomes 2H? Is it becuase H2 (if it remained as that) would be seen as a diatomic molecule which in this case it's not?
Asked by Gideon - Wed Sep 12 17:12:42 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That's correct. In the chemical formula H2SO4, there are 2 hydrogen atoms in the molecule. When it dissolves, the hydrogen ions break away from the rest of the molecule, leaving behind (SO4)2-. Since there is a need to indicate that there are 2 hydrogen cations in solution, it is written as 2 H+, not (H2)2+.

Asked by Uzma U - Thu Mar 26 19:12:36 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'll help you do one, and then hopefully you can do the rest ;) this one is fairly easy. potassium(s) + oxygen(g) ---> first step: What are the charges on these molecules/atoms? Potassium, K, has a charge of 1+, Oxygen has a charge of 2- The key is to balance these charges to make them neutral. You need 2 potassium ions for 1 oxygen ion. There's a method which involves criss-crossing this two ions and their charges to get the subscripts of the product. So, K +1 and O -2 just switch the two ionic charges (don't worry about the postive and the negative). The subscript for K is the charge on O, and the subscript for O is the charge on K, so your produce will be K2O then just balance your equation (don't forget that oxygen is a… [cont.]
