Friday Night Lights episodes that show guidance counseling sessions?
Q. I have a school project that involves school/guidance counseling. It appears that NBC's Friday Night Lights may have some scenes showing guidance counseling sessions. I'm looking to show examples of good counseling techniques for a presentation project. Can anyone recommend episodes that have counseling?

A. You can use what you learn in studying psychology when you are teaching or being a guidance counselor. Being a psychologist is like being someone's personal tutor for their life/attitude/whatever.

Does anyone know about guidance counseling degrees?
Q. I am looking to get my masters to become a guidance counselor - i want to work in a high school. But when I google, I can only find online programs. Can anyone offer schools - a possible accelerated degree? Any tips are appreciated! Thanks!

A. The degree is a Masters of Science in Education, with emphasis on educational psychology and guidance and counseling. There are numerous "real" universities with that degree. If you do the work on a full-time basis you can have the degree in hand in one year. Please note that not all universities are created equal in that area (or any other, for that matter!), so it would be useful for you to contact various school principals and ask where their counselors got their MSEd and who they would hire if they had a choice. For example, I checked in Illinois and found a distinct preference for school counselors who got their Masters at Eastern Illinois University and NOT University of Illinois, which is generally considered a finer school --… [cont.]

Is the Philippine guidance counseling mandatory after K-1 Visa Issue?
Q. My finacee has just recieved her K-1 Visa and we are unsure if it is required for her to attend the Guidance Counseling. We don not have any checklist items that state she needs to go. Counseling sessions are only in Cebu and Manila and it is quite inconvenient for her at this point. Thanks for the help

A. The CFO seminars are a requirement of the Philippine government for all immigrant visa applicants. Without the CFO certificate of Guidance and Counseling and the sticker received after attending he PDOS, she will not get though the airport immigration. It will be even more inconvenient for her if she doesn't attend the CFO seminars.

A. Just my opinion: I do not believe Socrates nor Plato have had a substantive influence on modern guidance and counseling. It can be argued that Sartre, Kierkegaard, and Nietzsche have had a limited influence on mainstream counseling as it pertains to existential and phenomenological insights.

I just got waitlisted from NYU's Counseling and Guidance graduate program, what are my chances of getting in?

Asked by aroses619 - Sat Feb 23 20:42:44 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I think you have a chance of getting in! I would try to contact a professor in the dept and tell him/her your situation. I would emphasize how strongly you want to get in the program and what can you do to increase your chance of getting in. My friend was rejected (not even waitlisted) at Columbia's grad program - he had poor grades. He made an appointment with one of the profs in the program and met with him. He was accepted within a couple weeks. The faculty members in the dept make the decision, not the admissions office.

High school guidance counseling?
Q. I'm currently an undergraduate majoring in sociology, but I am considering graduate school to focus on guidance counseling. 1) Is it realistic for me to 'major' in something during grad school when I didn't major in it during my undergrad years? 2) Is a masters degree sufficient to become a counselor? Do I need a doctorate eventually?
Asked by Ray - Sat Apr 5 23:54:59 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. 1) Yes it is possible. I've heard from many advisers that you don't need to have an undergraduate degree to get a graduate degree in something else. What they really want to see is that you've explored the field, in your case counseling. 2) um.. I'm not sure.. but in general Ph.D.s are research degrees intended for a career in academics (college, university level) and research

A. Guidance is basically advice, hopefully from someone you consider to be wise. Counseling is advice from someone with an agenda; i.e. a Human Resources Manager whose agenda is to maximize profit in a company by getting you to work at your best, or a Career Counselor whose agenda is to point you toward a job that you are capable of either doing or learning well, or a Minister whose agenda is to lead you toward ethical behavior within a religious context. Psychotherapy is medical advice from a trained professional whose aim is your improved mental health.

A. HR is a field of climbing the ladder without any need for advanced educational credentials. I would suggest you find a job in the HR area and work your way up. Get your employer to pay for your educational expenses while you're at it. Otherwise, simply having a masters without any experience will still only qualify you for entry level HR work.

A. Few careers are as potentially rewarding or as frustrating as that of a guidance counselor, whose job it is to help guide and structure children s educational and vocational direction as they pass through an unstable and confusing time in their lives. It can be frustrating because you will have limited power to make students follow your advice, and often you will face students who don t want to think about the day after tomorrow, as one counselor put it. A guidance counselor helps students determine courses of study and possible vocations. Counselors try to understand what motivates each student as well as his or her skills and desires. The best way to go about is to get list of institutions in your preferred locations through the net and fix an appointment and meet with the Correspondent. What do people think about a career as a careers guidance counsellor for young people?
Q. I'm thinking about a career in careers guidance counselling (in England) which I know now falls under the Connexions service. I was just wondering what people thought about it as a career. Is it rewarding? Having already worked in social services I am aware of the difficult people that you deal with but what I want to know do you feel as though you're making a difference and is it worthwhile?

A. I have a son due to leave school in May. I worry every day about him getting off to a good start and finding a worthwhile job. He has a hip problem, he is not above average academically but he is loyal, honest and hardworking. I hope with all my heart that there is someone at Connexions who cares enough to help him make a start in life as an adult, particularly because I do not live in England so what I can do for him is very limited. I am 55 and I still remember with appreciation what the youth employment service did to find work for me when I left school. If you are the kind of person who gains satisfaction from playing a pivotal role in making a start in life for young adults then there can be few jobs more important.

A. Someone who provides guidance offers you suggestions how to explore various alternatives. Counseling may also offer suggestions, but it also tries to teach you methods for reaching your goals and can help you determine what your goals are. In practice there may be no difference between the two, because it depends how people practice each technique and how they interpret their skills.
