How does the curriculum at a private school differ from the curriculum at a public school.?
Q. I would just like your opinions or any resources that talk about this topic. I know that a public school is curriculum is somewhat formed by the government but are their any other key differences in the two curriculum's.

A. well, i used to go to a public school, and now i go to a private one. the private school i go to has much more challenging classes than the public one did. my on-level chemistry class is ahead of my public school friend's advanced class! this holds true for my math class as well, and i doubt that my honors english and ap history classes would even be offered at public school, considering the fact that they're much higher level than anything i ever did at public school.

what is a college-preparatory curriculum and how is it different than a regular curriculum?
Q. Do public schools offer a college preparatory curriculum or just private schools? Looking at schools for my 1st grader and would like to know the difference. Thanks.
Asked by rk - Thu Jul 9 23:05:32 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Both public and private schools offer college-prep curricula. In some public schools, students have to have high enough grades and test scores to be allowed to take the college-prep curriculum. A college-prep curriculum is usually offered in high schools and includes the courses that colleges require for admission. As to a first grader, if you can afford a good private school, that would be better than most public schools, especially if the school offered a foreign language to first graders. The younger a person is when learning a language, the easier it is. If it's going to be a public elementary school and high school, try to find an elementary school where most students go on to high schools with good college-prep curricula.

A. first of all TESDA is not a school but rather a government agency tasked to improve and develop technical-vocational education and training. it standardizes and courses for technical-vocational courses all over the Philippines. here is a list of accredited training institutions with TESDA recognized courses. you need to call each institute for availability and costs.

What is a good homeschool curriculum for high school?
Q. I have recently started being homeschooled, and need a curriculum for the rest of the year. A semester-long curriculum would be great, if possible. I'm in 9th grade, but in mostly advanced classes, so it would also be good to be able to pick out individual courses I can take. It doesn't matter if it's computerized or on paper/books, as long as it's not incredibly expensive. If you're homeschooled, feel free to just say the program/curriculum you're using, and your thoughts about it.

A. I would recommend starting with the Elijah Company's resource guide -- it isn't only a catalog it has great synopsies of homeschooling method's and their main strength's and weaknesses. - once you see which method fits your family the best/you are drawn to the most (and don't freak if it's NOT the traditional school at home one!) then it's much easier to weed out curriculum choices. For instance if you are school at home you will appreciate ABEKA, ALpha Omega, Bob Jones, etc. If you are not they will drive you insane! Charlotte Mason fans will appreciate - Cindy Rushton, Karen Andreola, and others ( is a free website based on her works by the way) You get the picture... What home school curriculum should I use?
Q. I am having a little bit of a problem finding a curriculum I am comfortable with. I am looking for science and social studies curriculum for 1st, 3rd and 4th graders. I would like for them to be complete(in a box) with a lot of help for me. And I would like them to be secular, if possible. I would also prefer them to be grade-specific. Any ideas? I would like to add that I have no problem with christian curriculum, I am currently using Alpha-Omega lifepacs for science and social studies, I would just like something different.

A. I would high recommend Sonlight. Everything is planned out so you get to do all the fun stuff with your kids. They offer a bible component but you can order it separately. There are yahoo groups of families who are secular in their beliefs and still use Sonlight. Sonlight uses all real books and oftentimes you can combine grade levels so the kids are learning the same things. Best of Luck! Jana

How to make decisions in planning the curriculum?
Q. I am a teacher and I need to ask details on how to make decisions in planning the curriculum?
Asked by tues - Tue May 12 00:26:55 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I don't quite understand your question "ask details on how to make decisions planning the curriculum", but I am a retired teacher and I think you may be looking at an entire term or year and wondering how to plan it out to cover it all. l was an elem teacher and my goal at all levels in elem. was to make sure they could read, because by the time they got to middle school, they had to read to learn. Then I concentrated on math. Those, to me, are the 2 most basic skills and then writing. If you are secondary, I'm not as much help, but focus on what they must know to go on and make sure you get that done !

A. First, look for internal promotion opportunities. Could you become the head of the X department within your current school or at a new school in your district? In that position, you would be able to take on some curriculum leadership responsibilities while staying in the classroom. Once you've demonstrated that kind of initiative, jobs outside the classroom from the Board/Ministry of Education and/or the school district would be more within your reach. Those jobs are normally advertised in trade newsletters and on the websites of the respective agencies.

I would like to be able to teach the IB Diploma curriculum to high school students. I've visited the IB website but it is targeted to schools wanting to switch curriculums, not individual teachers wanting to upgrade their credentials. Is there anyone out here who teaches IB courses? What is the process for individual teachers who want to be able to teach this curriculum? Thanks!

How much influence does standardized testing have over the way the curriculum is developed?
Q. Who determines the guidelines for the curriculum at your school district? Does your school district align the standards with what is expected to be on the standardized tests? Thanks for your help.
Asked by --- orange --- - Tue Aug 18 20:19:21 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. In my district, the curriculum is very closely aligned with the standards for the state. My district is so large that it has it's own curriculum, developed by the "higher-ups" in the district. Many of the activities/topics are presented in interesting ways, but we teach very little that will not be tested. Our benchmarks and "practice" tests are usually made of questions from released standardized tests. There is very little room for creativity in lesson-planning; we have a bit of freedom in how we present the material, but absolutely none in what is taught.

A. I think that you you should start with making everyone in the room feel comfortable with who they are and where they come from. Thus making them comfortable with each other.I also think that bringing in mutual situations would help in understanding that on a certain level that background and or color has really nothing to do with being a human being in this life and times.I think that on the same level you should bring up differences in cultures and explain why these are not their fault nor self made choices. You are treading on thin ice here but I think your cause is valiant. Not all will be receptive. But some will.Thumbs up.

What is a good citizenship curriculum in Texas?
Q. I am homeschooling my children and I need to add good citizenship into our curriculum. Does anyone know if Girl Scouts could count? We do a lot of community work through GS and also learn how to deal with those around us, our age or not. Would this be a good citizenship program? If not, then what is?
Asked by beth_smith_1994 - Fri May 19 13:53:35 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I've been using our Bible study as our citizenship program, but I think Girl Scouts would work just as well. Because there's no real explanation/definition in the law of what 'citizenship' is, we've pretty much made up our own. I LOVE homeschooling in Texas. From what I've read and heard, it is SOOO much more strict in many other states.

A. Saxon Math! It is a great curriculum. It was the one I used from fifth to twelfth grade. It has about 20-30 problems per chapter that continually build on what was learned in the previous chapters. When the final exam came around I still remembered everything from the first chapters because of it.

A. You need to look at state guidelines first. Your state education agency should have a website. Then you need to reconcile those guidelines to district and campus expectations. You also will want to check any assessments your state mandates (like TAKS in Texas) to ensure alignment. My guess is that your state probably already has a curriculum (it's pretty much mandated by NCLB requirements), and what you're needing to write is more of a guide and scope and sequence. A scope and sequence lays out what activities can be done in a particular length of time for a particular topic. For example, a scope and sequence would lay out specific activities for a 5-day set of lessons on tessellations. Doing a key word search will give you… [cont.]
