Da‘wah (Arabic: دعوة‎) usually denotes preaching of Islam. Da‘wah means literally "issuing a summons" or "making an invitation", being the active participle of a verb meaning variously "to summon, to invite" (whose triconsonantal root is د ع و). A Muslim who practices da‘wah, either as a religious worker or in a volunteer community effort, is called a dā‘ī, plural du‘āt. A dā‘ī is thus a person who invites people to understand Islam through a dialogical process, and may be categorized in some cases as the Islamic equivalent of a missionary.

In Early Islam

In the Qur'ān, the term dawah has other senses. In Sura 30 of the Qur'ān, it denotes the call to the dead to rise from the tomb on the Day of Judgment. When used in the Qur'ān it generally refers to God's invitation to live according to his will. Thus, when used in the first centuries of Islam, it increasingly referred to the content of that message and was sometimes used interchangeably with sharī‘a and dīn.

Da‘wah is also described as the duty to "actively encourage fellow Muslims in the pursuance of greater piety in all aspects of their lives," a definition which has become central to contemporary Islamic thought.

Purposes of Da‘wah

In Islamic theology, the purpose of Da‘wah is to invite people, both Muslims and non-Muslims, to understand the worship of God as expressed in the Qur'ān, as well as to inform them about Muhammad. As directed to non-Muslims, it consists of proselytizing.

How can we give Dawah to our co-workers/friends?
Q. I mean, Muslims are interacting with non-Muslim co-workers, fellow students, and/or friends everyday...but most of the time Muslims don't even care to bring up Islam...and it might not be so easy to either... so how can we make it easy to bring up the topic of Islam when interacting with people of a different faith?

A. The most powerful would be that your Islam in action. Just you be a practicing Muslim. Action speaks louder than words. Many of us think that Da'wa means to make them understand. To convince someone is not easy and may just agree with you on a topic or dis-agree. The Hidayath comes from Allah . We Just do the activities from our side, and the duty is to Allah to make him the truth acceptable in their heart. Firstly have the pain and the thought in your heart as our beloved Prophet (pbuh) was always have the pain in his heart that none should be doomed in the hereafter. Then cry and pray for their Hidayath preferably after every prayer and at Tahajjud prayer. You can mention their names also. Then talk to them about Islam with wisdom and… [cont.]

How would you do dawah?
Q. If no-one is interested If they'll think you're imposing your beliefs on them? If you fear insult? Thanks

A. ^ shes absolutely right. they do insult us and the world thinks that islam is here to impose our beliefs on them just because we would like the same freedom of religion that they enjoy. the best way that we can show them that islam is the way is by the way that we present ourselves (especially the women!! we're the "oppressed" ones!) the way that we deal with them, the way they see us treat our children in public.. the list goes on.

DAWAH to non-muslims?
Q. Hi, how do you do dawah to non-muslims, can you give a few pointers, also what do you think of this site:
Asked by Truth - Sat Jul 5 08:24:33 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Allah guides who he wishes. The only thing you can do is answer any sincere questions to the best of your knowledge and ability. If you cannot answer a question make sure you make it clear that there is an answer but you dont know it at the moment.Research it,come back and continue your explanation. As for many people, they are simpy not open to the concepts of Islam because of various prejudices theyve accumulated. And it is tedious arguing with a wall.Leave them to believe what they will and wish them peace.
