How difficult is it to become a elementary teacher ?
Q. I don't know anything about it. Do I have to know all the subjects well to teach elementary school subjects ? Or to become a teacher, every people needs to be able to teach elementary, middle, high school subjects ? I'm thinking that if I just want to become elementary school teacher, I just only need to be able to teach what I usually learned when I was in elementary school.

A. To teach you need a 4 year degree in anything. Then you must take some extra classes at college for elem. education. You can sometimes do this while you teach. You don't have to be great at math and science or whatever to be a teacher, you just need to be good with kids, and understand how they learn. Engineers of learning.

How can an Elementary teacher make the crossover to teach middle school?
Q. How can someone who has a degree in elementary teaching make the crossover to teach middle school? I am about to graduate school to be a Elementary Teacher K-6 but I am interested in possibly teaching middle school. I am not super strong in one subject, but am interested in teaching Social Studies/History or Science. How can I go about this process?
Asked by Lee R - Fri Aug 28 16:01:04 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You will need to get in contact with your state's Department of Education. Each state has their own set of rules concerning this. I can tell you that in the state of Florida you can teach 6th grade only in a Middle School with your degree. If you wanted to teach more than one grade then you would have to take a certification test in the subject you are interested in teaching.

What do elementary school teachers have to do at the end of the school day?
Q. I'm curious about this because I want to teach elementary and even with all the fieldwork and student teaching I've done in college I still wonder if at the end of the day when all the kids have gone home, is that the end of the day for the teachers as well? Or does the principal expect you to volunteer for after school programs, do you stay in your room and do lesson planning?

A. I'm an elementary teacher and no our work day doesn't end when the kids go home (most people assume this, so don't worry.) Our contract (in my district) states that we have to remain on campus a minimum of 30 minutes after school's out. Most of us stay longer to grade papers, plan lessons, prep for the next day, etc. We usually do not "volunteer" for after school programs although we do have assigned duties that are handed out at the beginning of the year by the principal. Also, districts generally offer professional development classes after school, which helps when we update our credentials (according to NCLB.) Good luck in your journey! It's a rewarding career. :-)

What are the good elementary schools in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia?
Q. I am trying to find the best area for our family to move to in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, so which elementary schools are the best and which are the worst in the following cities: Chesapeake Portsmouth Suffolk Newport News Please help, I am trying to find out as much as I can before we move in two weeks! Thanks in advance for your help! I am in Florida, so I can't drive around or visit the schools, I am sort of flying blind here, trying to find a school on the internet. We have to stay in one of the 4 cities I mentioned, because those are close enough to my husband's work without the trouble of tunnel commuting (like with Norfolk or Virginia Beach).

What can I do with a degree in elementary education besides teach?
Q. I am going to graduate in May with a degree in Elementary Education. Throughout my student teaching I have decided teaching is really not for me. I don't have the money to get another degree so I'm trying to find a job that uses my current degree, but that is not teaching. I enjoy art (photography) and the outdoors, but my parents are not supportive in these careers because they say I won't make enough money and that they didn't send me to school to not have a job. What ideas do you have for a possible career using an elementary ed degree and my other interests?

A. Not a whole lot without some degree of re-schooling... If you're good with Enlish, there are many, many textbook & school publishing companies looking for editors... if you're a good sales person and you don't mind working on commission, here are many school supply companies that are hire salespeople with education backgrounds... I agree about doing photography on the side, because it could take awhile to turn it into your own business... if you do portrait photography you can find a moderate-paying job that will let you do that until you save up for your own business (that's where the real career money would be). A. I can tell you that in 4th grade, the students learn Regional Studies (Northeast, South, Midwest and West), State History, and Economics. Included in the regional studies youlearn about the history of that region and its present state. As for racism and war, we don't cover much besides current events. At Black History month we do discuss racism and how it shaped our society. You wouldn't believe how receptive 4th graders are to this.

What are the challenges of teaching elementary school science?
Q. I am finishing up my education and will be teaching next fall. I am wondering what challenges there are to teaching science in elementary school. This subject scares me more than any other. Please help!
Asked by myblackjumper - Tue Jun 13 04:17:05 2006 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I think for many elementary teachers in the US, the big challenge is getting to actually teach science. Sadly, much of it is being pushed out of the way by greater emphasis on improving test scores in reading and math. Another challenge is simply the setting up of the hands-on activities and the cleaning up. Hand-in-hand with all of that is safety issues. Assessment can be a big challenge when doing hands-on science activities. How can you be sure all the kids got what they should have gotten out of all of that? Learning journals/lab notebooks turn out to be crucial here. They also give kids a chance to practice important skills like writing, describing, and summarizing.

Q. I am going to be an elementary school teacher in the Fall of next year, and I know a common problem for male elementary school teachers is receiving false child abuse claims (both physically and sexually); which is one of my biggest fears. A. The best way to prevent such things is to make sure that you are not in the room alone with a student at any time. It should not be much of a problem as long as the door is open, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Also, avoid touching your students at all costs. If you happen to bump into one accidentally in the hallway (turning a corner and such), it shouldn't be a big deal, but don't intentionally put your hands on a student. As an elementary teacher, this shouldn't be too much of a big deal, because they are so young and are unlikely to try to initiate such activities which would lead to such an allegation. How much does a public school elementary education teacher get paid yearly?
Q. I am interested in possibly having a major as elementary education and i was wanting to know how much they get paid yearly.

A. Each school district has a different pay scale. You will have to go to the school district's website and do a search for salary. I can tell you that, today, a beginning teacher in Miami-Dade County will make $38,000 a year. If the union gets their way the beginning teaching salary will be $40,000 but that is a BIG if.

Asked by Support HR 1207 - Wed Jul 15 01:39:25 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Only have a minor concentration if there is another subject that you absolutely love. Remember that the areas of concentration, whether major or minor involve extra non-education courses that you will have to take and pass. This is why I recommend that you choose something that you really like and find interesting. What will help you get a job is doing your best during your student teaching.
