An equation is a mathematical statement, in symbols, that two things are exactly the same (or equivalent). Equations are written with an equal sign, as in The equations above are examples of an equality: a proposition which states that two constants are equal. Equalities may be true or false. Equations are often used to state the equality of two expressions containing one or more variables. In the reals we can say, for example, that for any given value of x it is true that The equation above is an example of an identity, that is, an equation that is true regardless of the values of any variables that appear in it. The following equation is not an identity: It is false for an infinite number of values of x, and true for only two, the roots or solutions of the equation, x = 0 and x = 1. Therefore, if the equation is known to be true, it carries information about the value of x. To solve an equation means to find its solutions. Many authors reserve the term equation for an equality which is not an identity. The distinction between the two concepts can be subtle; for example, is an identity, while is an equation, whose roots are x = 0 and x = 1. Whether a statement is meant to be an identity or an equation, carrying information about its variables can usually be determined from its context; or by making a distinction between the equality sign ( = ) for a statement not true except perhaps in particular situations, and the equivalence symbol () for statements know to be true without further specification. Letters from the beginning of the alphabet like a, b, c... often denote constants in the context of the discussion at hand, while letters from end of the alphabet, like x, y, z..., are usually reserved for the variables, a convention initiated by Descartes. GNU Free Documentation License How can the equation for kinetic energy be used to explain how matter is created? Q. The equation for kinetic energy is KE = 1/2m*v^2. In English, "Kinetic energy is equal to half the mass multiplied by the velocity squared." So how do you change energy into matter with this equation? Asked by CrO4^2- - Mon Sep 15 01:56:37 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Think about this. Matter can't travel faster than light. Thar mean you have only one variable once object reaches speed of light since velocity is fixed. Now, if energy increase then only variable left is mass. Thus, energy goes up by increase in mass. Answered by 2cent - Mon Sep 15 02:25:31 2008 What equation do I need to find the kinematic viscosity of water given the temp and pressure? Q. I am given the temp and pressure (10 deg C and 35564 kPa) and need to find the kinematic viscosity of water. I know that the kinematic viscosity is dynamic viscosity/density but how do I take into account the temperature and pressure? I don't want an answer, just an equation or explanation. Thanks. Asked by blueorion3 - Wed Oct 1 12:36:07 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I really doubt that pressure will be an issue with either viscosity or density. You may need to consult the Temp./ viscosity tables and the Temp./ density tables and just plug those values into the equation you alteady have. The viscosity will vary with temperature, the density, not much. To be practical, if you can find one , a (rho) at around 20C , just use that one.
