An interesting relationship between Euclid's algorithm and Fibonacci numbers?
Q. Let a, b be natural numbers with a > b and a > 1. Let k be the number of steps that Euclid s Algorithm requires to compute hcf (a, b), counted according to the convention that k = 0 if b = 0, k = 1 if b > 0 and b divides a, and so on. Show that a > Fk , where Fn is the nth Fibonacci number defined by the recursion F0 := 0, F1 := 1 and Fn+1 := Fn 1 + Fn .

A. Your question is related to G. Lame's Theorem (follow the link below for details): according which the Euclid Algorithm works with a slowest possible speed (needs maximum number of iterations) when applied to 2 consecutive Fibonacci numbers (they are co-prime). The reason is on every step the quotients are 1s hence the decrement speed is the slowest. Imagine a k-steps sequence for a and b (with quotients q_{n} and remainders r_{n} at nth step) along with the recursive relationships for Fibonacci numbers: Step 1) a = bq_{1} + r_{1}; F_{k+1} = F_{k} + F_{k-1}; Step 2) b = r_{1}q_{2} + r_{2}; F_{k} = F_{k-1} + F_{k-2} Step 3) r_{1} = r_{2}q_{3}+ r_{3}; F_{k-1} = F_{k-2} + F_{k-3} . . . . . . . . . . Step k-1) r_{k-3} = r_{k-2}q_{k-1} + r_{k [cont.]
