How do you determine the chemical formula of an ionic compound?
Q. Im studying chemistry right now and i am having trouble determining what the chemical formulas are to ionic and covalent compounds. Here is a sample question: Calcium (Ca) combines with chlorine (Cl) to form calcium chloride, an ionic compound. Calcium has two electrons in its outer energy level and chlorine has seven electrons in its outer energy level. Determine the formula for calcium chloride and EXPLAIN your answer. I researched calcium chloride and found the formula is CaCl2, but on a test i wont be able to research the answer. Are there easy ways to determining chemical formulas? Thank you for helping, Ryan C.

A. In ionic compounds, you have the metals (on the left side of the periodic table) who tend to pass off electrons, and you have the non-metals (on the right side) who have "gaps" in their electron shells and tend to accept electrons. In the case of CaCl2: Chlorine has 7 electrons in its outer shell. A full shell for would require 8 electrons, so it is "looking" for 1 extra electron to fill its outer shell. Calcium has 2 electrons in its outer shell. It would like to give those extra two away, so it's looking for 2 takers. Soo... Chlorine (with the one gap) calls up another Chlorine (also with the one gap), and now you have a total of two gaps. Two extra electrons from Calcium and two gaps from the two Chlorine make a good fit, and… [cont.]

What is the difference between toddler formula and baby formula?
Q. I have switched my 4 month old Baby Boy to Baby's Only Dairy Toddler Formula because it seems to be the most organic formula out there, and because I have compared it's ingredients to other infant formulas and it seems to be equal. Does anyone know any medical facts or information about this?
Asked by Kurt's Mama - Wed May 20 01:21:35 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No, I think they are quite similar. Baby's Only is an "organic" formula, which mostly markets itself as "toddler" because the company does in fact believe, as do medical experts, that breast milk is far and away the most healthy thing to feed an infant. Infants should be getting breast milk, not formula. At least, that is what I have heard about the company. Otherwise, I would just wonder if it contains DHA/ARA and iron supplementation. There are no other differences.

How much formula does your 5 month old drink?
Q. My 5 month old daughter has just started solids along with her formula. She drinks 3 6oz bottles during the day and a 7oz at bedtime. I also give her 1 container of stage 1 baby food and 2-3 tablespoons of cereal. I was just wondering how many ounces of formula your baby drinks at eat feeding and how do you know when to increase the amount of ounces per bottle? I'm a first time mom and have LOTS of questions! She is doing great with the solids, she would eat more if I would let her!

What excel formula can I use to automatically generate a rating that s one notch below the original rating?
Q. I have a portfolio of securities and I would like to simulate a result under a situation in which all the securities get downgraded one notch. For example, if I have a security currently rated Aaa by Moodys, what formula can I use to make it downgrade to Aa automatically? I need a formula that can work with the whole portfolio. Thanks.
Asked by zhl2o3 - Thu Dec 6 17:09:10 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First, you have to set up a table(a simplified version of 4 ratings) say in A1:B3 you have A1 A A2 B A3 C B1 B B2 C B3 D use a vlookup formula to lookup the downgraded rating, VLOOKUP(lookup_value ,table_array ,col_index_num ,range_lookup ) is the general format of the function, say the cell you want to show the downgraded rating is D1, so in D1, you put =VLOOKUP( C1, A1:B3, 2, false) C1 is the cell that has the original rating A1:B3 is the table you build above 2 is the second column of that table you want the desire rating to return if there's a match false is use because we expected there's an exact match

What is the empirical formula of the compound? What is the molecular formula of the compound also?
Q. A compound that contains only nitrogen and oxygen is 30.4% N by mass; the molar mass of the compound is 92 g/mol. What is the empirical formula of the compound? What is the molecular formula of the compound also?
Asked by John - Thu Jan 22 01:01:38 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. so you know that u have 30.4 % nitrogen by mass, you can write that as: 30.4 g N then u know you have 69.6 % O left but you can write that as 69.6 g O ( 100 - 30.4 = 69.4) ok so now you need to calculate the empirical formula: you can do that by taking each respective element and finding the value for one mole of that element for example: 1) 30.4gN x ( 1 mol N / 14.06g N) and you get: about 2.16 mol of N (since the grams cancel) 2) 69.6g O x (1 mol O / 16.0g O ) and you get: 4.35 mol O. now you found the two elements for one mol, so you take the smallest one and divide all of the values by it ex: 1) 2.16 / 2.16 = 1 2) 4.35 /2.16 = about 2 ok so now yuo know that the empirical formula is equal to (N1)(O2)… [cont.]

What is the difference between a molecular formula and an empirical formula?
Q. What is the difference between a molecular formula and an empirical formula? What is the molecular formula of the molecule that has an empirical formula of CH2O and a molar mass of 120.12 g/mol? Please help me!
Asked by Master Lee - Thu Feb 5 21:19:54 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A molecular formula tells you the ratios of each different element in a molecule. An empirical formula tells you just the lowest ratio of the different elements in each molecule. Each has a specific weight associated with it, and the molecular weight will always be a whole number multiple of the empirical weight. In this case, the empirical formula CH2O has an associated empirical weight of 12 + 2 + 16 = 30 g/equivalent. The molecular weight is (almost) exactly 4 times the empirical weight, meaning that the molecular formula is exactly four times the empirical formula: C4H8O4.

What consistency should the dirty nappies of formula fed babies be and how have often should they have them?
Q. I have had to stop breast feeding my 6 week old baby and have put her on formula. I have read that babies on formula have one dirty nappy a day but my little girl has a dirty nappy every feed, which is watery with bits of formula in it. Does anyone know if this is normal, she's only been on formula a day.
Asked by Tracey L - Tue Feb 10 06:44:28 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Every child is different. As long as she is not in pain when passing poo, and is feeding well there is no problem. Some breast fed babies dirty their nappies at every feed some at two or three feeds. The same is true of formula fed babies. If her dirty nappies remain watery then she should be seen by a Dr and a specimen sent in case she has a gastric infection.

A. This is pretty involved but here goes. working from the volume: Using simple gas laws we know that at standard temp and pressure 1 mole of gas takes up 22.4 liters of space (STP = 0 C and 1 atm) so we need to wrok out the molar volume in your experiment your temperature is 100 C (temperature of steam at 1 atm) this is equal to 373K you started with 5 cm3 and ended with 89cm3 so the volume in there at 100 C is 84cm3 Using Charles' law you can work out what volume this is at STP We can ignore pressure as this stays constant V1/T1 = V2/T2 V1 = 84 ml, T1 = 373K V2 = ?, T2 = 273K (0 C) so you get 84/373 = V2/273 0.2252 * 273 = V2 = 61.5 ml So at STP your volume would be 61.5 ml Knowing that 1 mole of gas occupies 22400 ml at STP you… [cont.]

A. One hit gets you high, but gravity gets you low. Calculate the time it takes for the speed to reach zero. You get that by dividing the speed and the gravity. Then you multiply that time by the speed at which you're getting higher, and do the difference with half of the gravity time square. And that's how calculate how high you get.

what formula can i use in excel to calculate expenses based on the income of 2 people?
Q. If i make $3000 a month and my roommate $2000 i need to know how to calculate expenses based on both of our incomes without doing the 50/50 deal. I'd like to use excel. Does anyone have a template or at least the formula?
Asked by Juan A - Mon Jun 30 17:55:24 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sure... if you would like to make it proportional to your incomes, just take 3000 / 5000 * each expense for your portion (5000 is the sum of your incomes monthly), and 2000 / 5000 * each expense for your roommate. Or, more simply, 60% for you and 40% for your roommate. In Excel you can use, if an expense were in cell A1: =3000/5000*A1 To get your portion, or =2000/5000*A1 for your roommate's. Does that help? What is the best way to prepare infant formula?
Q. I am beginning my little guy on formula, and my Pediatrician really didn't give any specifics on preparation. I've read to boil or not to boil (either to sterilize the water or to prevent bacterial infections from the powdered formula itself). We have a purification system for our faucets...but do I still need to boil the water and add the formula while it's hot to avoid bacterial infections from the powdered formula? Help! I know this may sound 101 basics, but there is so much conflicting info to overwhelm a new mommy like myself! Thanks for any advice!

A. Nah, I wouldn't worry about boiling the water, especially if you have a purification system. We add the (cold) water to the bottle first, then put in the required scoops and stir (my husband shakes the bottle, I stir; either way will work).
