Heuristic (pronounced /hjʊˈrɪstɨk/) is an adjective for experience-based techniques that help in problem solving, learning and discovery. A heuristic method is particularly used to rapidly come to a solution that is hoped to be close to the best possible answer, or 'optimal solution'. Heuristics are "rules of thumb", educated guesses, intuitive judgments or simply common sense. Heuristics as a noun is another name for heuristic methods.

In more precise terms, heuristics stand for strategies using readily accessible, though loosely applicable, information to control problem solving in human beings and machines.

Example

Perhaps the most fundamental heuristic is "trial and error", which can be used in everything from matching bolts to bicycles to finding the values of variables in algebra problems.

Here are a few other commonly used heuristics, from Polya's 1945 book, How to Solve It:

  • If you are having difficulty understanding a problem, try drawing a picture.
  • If you can't find a solution, try assuming that you have a solution and seeing what you can derive from that ("working backward").
  • If the problem is abstract, try examining a concrete example.
  • Try solving a more general problem first (the "inventor's paradox": the more ambitious plan may have more chances of success).

What does heuristic mean?
Q. i looked it up on many pages but can't get a good understanding of what it is. can someone better explain and use some examples too.

A. A heuristic is a strategy to solve a problem. Many people, to better understand complex math or physics, will draw pictures. This picture drawing is a heuristic. Some will "work backwards" to solve problems, or use "rules of thumbs" Using your fingers to count is a heuristic. Anything that helps you solve a problem. If you watch detective shows, you will see them put pictures on a board, and draw lines and maps. Making brainstorming webs, also is an example. The heuristic is not the solution itself, but what you do to obtain the solution.

A. Homonyms are good. You can get a huge selection of laminated ones from Terry Gilligan. He has a website - www.talkingmatters.org.

A. Some or many of the previous suggestions are quite interesting, but I'd like to remind you the following (what I think is obvious) Make sure your anti-virus software runs updates often and has the most up to date definitions but because what it finds using heuristics (a form of AI to determine virus threats) is something it thinks is dangerous but might not be. Better also to do is use an anti-spyware program (like SpybotS&D from www.safer-networking.org, which is something I'd definitely recommend) because the heuristics detect something but doesn't understand it, this will identify a whole plethora of programs and registry entries to be removed.
