Scholars who write about history are called historians. It is a field of research which uses a narrative to examine and analyse the sequence of events, and it often attempts to investigate objectively the patterns of cause and effect that determine events. Historians debate the nature of history and the lessons history teaches. A famous quote by the philosopher George Santayana has it that "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." The stories common to a particular culture, but not supported by external sources (such as the legends surrounding King Arthur) are usually classified as cultural heritage rather than the "disinterested investigation" needed by the discipline of history. I've always thought that social studies was the same as History, but it also asks me how many years of History I've taken. I plan on taking two years of History (I'm a Sophomore) and I don't know what they mean. The college I want to go to (UNC at Chapel Hill) doesn't require history, but they require three years of social studies. Would my two years in History (World History and US History) count as social studies? Are Social Studies and History both the same? If not how would I fufill their requirements? -Please help Asked by blindmice6 - Mon Apr 28 20:04:16 2008 - - 2 Answers - 2 Comments A. Your histories would count as social studies. When I applied to UNC, I put down my histories (which were US history, World history, Government & Politics, etc.) and got in. Answered by Nazz - Fri May 2 02:49:27 2008 What do you think about the way history is taught in High schools and universities? Q. There have been so many questions about Black history month. Fitting I guess considering that it's Feb. But what do you think of the way history is taught in general? Just approach the question from any direction you like from pedogy, to practice, to experience in a history class. Asked by slinda - Tue Feb 13 15:25:32 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. The way history is taught in high schools these days is simply awful. While the fault is often directed at the teachers, the real problem in the pedagogy lays within the hands of the administrators developing the curriculum's. The mandatory curriculum leaves teachers little leeway to go beyond the superficial drivel of the text book. The subjection of history to fit modern standards of political correctness has diluted the content to a confusing and uninspiring generality. As a history major getting set to graduate, I know that history is much more than memorizing facts, figures and dates. However, the current trend toward constant standardized testing every year in math, science and English leaves time for little else of substance to… [cont.] Answered by notaxpert - Tue Feb 13 15:42:22 2007 What interesting books on history are good?
Q. I love to read and I love history. Mostly Ancient history and civilizations. Some history books are so boring though and I quickly lose interest. I want to find books on history that will capture my attention and will be difficult to put down. Are there any books like these? Are there also any history books that follow a story line? For example a fiction book that has a lot of historical facts about the place and times? I need books that will keep me interested. If you love history, above and beyond read Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond, it is easy reading and will leave you thinking about the world in ways you never thought before. The basic premise is that the author was asked, Why was it that Europe invaded the rest of the world. While at first the answer seemed obvious, because they had the guns and ships to do so, the questioner rephrased, why did they have the technology to conquer the rest of the world, why didn't the Aztecs or the Zulus develop such things? The answer takes a book's length to explain, and it begins with the earliest days of what we would call man, an excellent read.
