How can I make history a meaningful career? How can activism fit in with history?
Q. I really enjoy history and would love to have a more scholarly career. However, it bothers me that a job history doesn't really imply a shaping and changing of the future, while I would like to have a more meaningful effect in working towards positive change. What are your opinions on the relevance of history and how it can be meaningful? Are there are any careers you can think of that would combine history and activism? (I am also not so much interested in studying activism)

When in rock history where you could start your rock career?
Q. If I can choose which era in rock history so that I could start my rock career, I would have belonged in the British Invasion period of the 1960s when bands such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Who gained popularity. Being the John Lennon/Mick Jagger/Roger Daltrey type of leader of the group, I would shape rock history with concept albums, psychedelia, and rebellious music. What about you? When in rock history where you could start your rock career? Why?

A. London in the mid - late 1960s. Why? Because that's where and when some of my favourite bands got started. Also, the way in which you could get into the music industry back then ~ you played lots of little bars and clubs, worked your way around, and no one batted an eyelid if you shuffled the band around a bit as you went. And because I've always had a bit of a 'thing' about the 1960s, especially for the music scene :)

What kind of history did they teach during medieval times?
Q. Not the history of medieval times, but the history of the history of it I guess.
Asked by nicole - Thu Sep 11 03:39:11 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. First, there was no public education in that era. The vast majority of people got no education, including learning to read and write. For those few who were educated, most instruction was in Latin. They learned to read and write it, and learned history from the Bible, as well as studying lives of saints. Some had knowledge of Greek and Roman historical writing and literature, but such knowledge would have been very unusual before the Renaissance. Students of certain subjects such as medicine, law, astronomy, rhetoric, and mathematics were usually trained in the Greek and Roman works relevant to their specialties.

How much does your history class really teach you about history?
Q. I mean general history, not just American history. From what I've heard you don't really get taught a lot about other histories, like French, Indian, Canadian, etc., unless it comes to play a part of American history. Like I'm sure when learning about the 2 world wars, you'll hear a bit about German history, eh? But what about besides that? You don't learn anything else about German history, do you? I already do my own studying, but I think schools should start to teach kids about more than just American history in history class. Otherwise it's not really living up to its name, now is it? Personally I would like it if in order to pass history class, you had to learn about American history, and also another foreign history of your choice.… [cont.]

A. Personally I don't think kids get taught enough history period, there's a huge percentage of American kids who don't know when World War II was or what the Great Depression was all about. Our problem was pretty much the opposite, when we were in school they taught us multiculturalism and all histories except American history. I don't want to sound like a patriotic stooge, but I just found it interesting there was a district out there that was the opposite. But you are right, kids need foreign history as well otherwise they won't grow up very knowledgeably about the world out there (and we aren't very isolated anymore). Perhaps a general world history course would bring about samples of cultural histories from across the world to at least… [cont.]

Don't be afraid to be funny about your history. Amuse the reader since it's going to be read by an admissions rep who will read thousands and get bored. be unique!

What type of history would the Oregon Trail be considered?
Q. Would it be social history? I know it's not diplomatic. Any historians out there? What are some other types of history?
Asked by rascalgirl14 - Thu Nov 30 17:49:41 2006 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Well, I'm much more into the social aspect of history than that of the political or diplomatic, but all three must be considered. There was a political dimension: the US was growing, and settling this area with US citizens was obviously more to our advantage than to allow it to be settled by others who might prove less than friendly toward our interests. There was a diplomatic one, as well--we nearly went to war with Britain over the Canadian border. Of course, the social portion is found in the reasons why people went there, and the interactions with the native peoples already in the area. It goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway) that the consequences for the Native Americans weren't necessarily good--people of the nineteenth… [cont.]

How is your Credit History is affected in the UK?
Q. Dear all, I would like to know which actions affect your credit history in the UK. I mean, if you forget to pay one bill of a telecommunications company and you proceed into payment in the next 15 days, is your credit history affected? Thank you! Thank you so much for your information. Actually, no one is threatening me, however I am new in the UK, planning to create the appropriate circumstances to have a mortgage; that's why I am asking. Thank you again!

A. Your credit report will only have defaults listed on it, a bill forgotten for 15 days followed by payment will not appear. You need to remember that the companys [Experian etc] that hold your credit record do so with good business ethics, and would not gain anything from adding defaults to your history when they are not valid, as it would invalidate thier credibility. If you got a bill from your telecoms company threatening that failure to pay might effect your credit status, they only do that to scare non payers into paying, it;s an automaticaly generated letter. If you have paid your bill now... There is no need for worry. It;s worth getting a credit report anyway, theyre's interesting and informative.Without bias or prejudice I… [cont.]

A. As you are (probably) American, and I am not, I cannot really give you 100% accurate advice. What universities offer in the history department varies greatly per university. The best thing you can do is inquire at your preferred universities, and go from there. Suppose your university only offers courses in the Classics department, ask them which university offers courses in the history department, and at what level/detail. They should know. Good luck!

Q. I've got a messed up credit history but I'm otherwise a tip top person, no bad criminal record or anything. A. Congrats on the new job. Basically, a background check deals with law enforcement agencies. As long as you have no convictions you get the job. Credit reports and background checks are not related in any way. Unless your employer specifically said that they are pulling your credit report there are no worries for you. Even if he is pulling your credit report then you would probably have to have a bankruptcy to raise any eyebrows. Just act very confident and you'll probably get the job.

How would history change if the United States launched the atomic bombs in Germany?
Q. How would this change our history? Would the Pacific Theater be a bloody fight as predicted? Would the Second World War last longer? What major cities would be targeted to attach Germany, and would the nuclear fallout affect the entire continental Europe?

A. An incredibility stupid question. By the time the first bomb was ready to deploy the Reich had been defeated. For all practical purposes this could be the stupidest history question ever ask here. I will not waste my time anymore with questions like this. s_e_p
