Indiana - How long do I have to live here to be a citizen?
Q. I moved to Indiana from KY a couple of months ago to live with my boyfriend. Do I have to live here a certain period of time before I can get an Indiana license, etc.? I'm pregnant and eligible for a program called WIC in KY (there's a similar one in Indiana). It's a program for pregnant women and children 0-3(or 4 or 5) that assists with several foods such as milk, cheese, and beans while pregnant, and formula when the baby is born. It changes as the baby grows. If I can't be a citizen of Indiana, I need to go to KY for this. However, can I be a citizen now? Like I said, I've been here for 2 months. I've changed most of my addresses, but there are still a few (for instance, my college files) that are still KY.

A. My husband works for WIC in Indianapolis and I believe you just have to show proof that you live here now; like mail to that residence. And you may have to fill out some documentation that you work here. I do not think there is a waiting period, but you may have a wait to get an appointment because they are really busy. Just call the one in your area to get an appointment or just stop in to see what they will need you to bring in. Hope this helps. Good Luck to you! Oh and to the 'secret lady' who wrote in above...don't forget to hit spell check...Hooser is spelled HOOSIER! Yes I am a proud resident and native!

Under Indiana labor laws, is it legal for a company to make a supervisor spend their own money for work?
Q. The company I work for is holding an event for which they are mandating the supervisors make chili. This is not a request, and it is implied that those who don't comply will be reprimanded. However these supervisors will not be reimbursed any fees incurred due to or by the event. I need to know, according to local labor laws for the state of Indiana, is this a legal action?

A. Forget the chilli...no company in any state can make you do that! I think they can get in trouble for even threatening recourse for something like that. go here:

How many days in Indiana does a business have to respond to an unemployment claim ?
Q. I voluntarily quit my job in Indiana due to medical reasons and per Dr's orders. I filed for unemployment 2 weeks ago. can anyone tell me how much longer will I have to wait for a decision . Indiana told me it could be up to 8 weeks to get a response, for a voluntary quit. That couldn't be right can anyone let me know ?
Asked by elvisjmays@sbcglobal.net - Tue Sep 29 10:20:02 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I was under the assumption it was 30 days to respond. If they disagree with your unemployment claim then there is another 30 days to schedule a hearing. If they do not respond to your claim you will automatically win the unemployement claim. However, I wouldn't spend the money too quickly they can still appeal (and mabey win)! Good luck to you.

Who is the Delaware County Treasurer in Muncie Indiana, and how are you supposed to pay your taxes? In money?
Q. This is in regards to Cary Malchow's protest of property taxes in Muncie, Indiana. The treasurer told him to take his MONEY away and "bring it back the way its supposed to be." I, as a taxpayer, am confused by the treasurer's statement. Can anyone clarify?
Asked by matt m - Wed Aug 15 07:11:49 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The Treasurer is Mr. John A. Dowd. Typically you write a check payable to the Treasurer of your county, literally payable to "Treasurer of Delaware County". You could possibly be allowed to pay with cash or credit however. Cash is usable for "All Debts Public and Private" and should be able to used.

What is the Indiana Code for the pitch on a handicap ramp?
Q. We are wanting to build our grandparents a handicap ramp that can be removed later in life if need be. I was wondering what the pitch out the ramp is to be by Indiana Code
Asked by Misty N - Wed Feb 27 15:23:42 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Not sure what your municipality has adopted for codes, but the International Residence Code standard is 1:8. That is, 1 foot height increase with every 8 feet of run. Check with your local code authority or zoning office to make sure this is what they stipulate. Hope this helps.

They've got a Residence Inn ( ) that you could probably get a decent rate at (check the link for info, pics & online booking). Not all that familiar with the area, but it sounds nice! Have fun!

If I work in Indiana but live in Illinois, How will the taxes work?
Q. I have to live in Illinois to continue my Veterans Benefits, but I have found a great job in Indiana. How will the taxes work?
Asked by I Love Emergency Medicine - Sun Nov 23 04:30:46 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You'll have to pay taxes in Illinois, but you'll be deducted as Indiana taxes. You'll end up having to file an Indiana non resident tax return, to get most of your Indiana tax back, but you may have to pay Illinois before you can do that. It's not a terribly complicated process, but it's messy. Still, millions of people do it every year.

What should I do with the annuity part of my indiana teacher's retirement fund?
Q. I can leave the money in the Indiana State Teacher's retirement fund and draw at a higher interest rate. However, when both my wife and I die, no one will get the money. I could transfer the money to an IRA or something similar for a lower interest rate. When we die, our beneficiaries will be able to receive the money. What have others done in this situation?

A. It seems fair either way. You could transfer it to a lower interest paying IRA, but you would have less money to live on each month, but even worse, you could run out of money before you die. Perhaps each of your proposed beneficiaries would be willing to sign a contract that they will each give you, say $200 a month, to help support you should this occur (fat chance!). If you die young, your beneficiaries would get some money. If you keep the annuity, you'll have more money each month and it will never run out. Which should you chose? I like risk avoidance, so I'd go for the annuity. Your heirs will think of you for what good you did in life not for how much money your demise brought them.
