Did you attended Catholic schools from K-12?
Q. I'd be interested to know from current college students, or others who went through K-12 fairly recently, whether they consider their Catholic school experience overall a positive one even if, at some point along the way, you went through a period of hating it and wanting to be in public schools. Does the education you received give you an edge on your PS-educated peers in college? Would you send your future children to Catholic schools based on your experience?

A. I went to catholic schools from K-12 and I live in the suburbs of a large city. The public schools in my area are very good (the high school I would have went to had I gone to a public school is rated one of the best in the country), but I come from a traditional Irish Catholic family, so off I went. Honest, the education wasn't that different. I did get a more multicultural experience (i.e. more minority students) at my Catholic high school than the public school would have given me. But the only real difference between my high school and the public school was that we had religion classes and wore uniforms. My high school was a great school, and since it was a large one (1400 students), it was easy to maneuver and make friends. It… [cont.]

A question for voters?
Q. Back in 2003, Barak Obama supported State Bill 99 in his home state of Illinois. This bill made it manditory that all students, from grades K-12, learn about the transmission of STDs, sexual intercourse, how to practice safe sex, etc. "...grades K through 12 shall include instruction on the prevention of sexually trasmitted infections, trasmission and spread of HIV." I'm just curious as to why six year olds need to be educated on safe sex at such a young age. I remember my first sexual education class was in 5th grade, which is fine, but any student younger than that has no need to be aware of such a personal matter as sex. To Barak Obama supporters: This is what your candidate supports. Do you support it as well? P.S. I am NOT… [cont.]

A. okay, just to balance the scales: since you don't like Obama for this, do you like McCain for how he treated his first wife and children? PS I don't support either one, so go ahead and heap stuff on me, I don't mind :o)

Education K-12 : Insuring mid-value student use technology items?
Q. My students check out and use outside the classroom cameras (video, stills), with $200-$1000 value. A couple break every year, maybe one "disappears". For the checked out items that disappear, that's easy to charge the student full value. However, for the items that come back broken, but have no noticeable sign of neglect, it's difficult to fault the student. (I have seen them fail during use, and not through neglect. Some of my cameras out of warranty break with defects that I later discover are known with the product, so not the fault of the student. These no-fault breaks are very expensive for my classroom budget and instead of increase availability of cameras, I'm maintaining a low number of cameras because of replacement. What… [cont.]

A. Is this your personally owned equipment or is this school property? Depending on the value of the item, cost of insurance and out of pocket deductible for low cost items the insurance may not be worth it. If it is personally owned I was going to suggest insurance like renters or homeowners to cover it. I do not know what classes you teach but maybe if this is something out of budget you can charge a class fee of $20 per student and have that be on hold and let it accumulate for replacements. The PTO may be able to assist sometimes if they have the funds you can request classroom equipment.
