what is dyscalculia is it the same as slow visual processing speed?
Q. I am a developmental psychology student and I recently did some research on dyscalculia, I don't understand the difference between this and slow visual processing speed disorder. Also is dyscalculia a registered learning disability under the DSM. Myself I have a slow visual processing speed disability but I dont read slowly, dyscalculia seems to be similar symptoms but I dont know if its the same thing or not?

A. Snap research with google and online dictionary indicates that dyscalculia is a learning disability specific to mathematics. It would be to numbers, what dyslexia is to words. So it does not seem to register to speed of general visual processing.

How do I know if I have Dyscalculia?
Q. I have a really hard time with math, ever since I was little, and I make little mistakes. It takes me a REALLY long time to learn even the easy stuff. I also have had a really hard time with things that should come really easy to me by now (time, money change, etc.) I am a junior in high school. If somone could tell me please?? The tests are really expensive, like 500-200 dollars...is there a cheap way to find out. (I have tried every test strategy possible...no improvement). PLEASE???

A. Yes, you do. I don't know where you live, but your school should have a special ed dept. to help you. They are supposed to test you. It's their responsibility. My son has it and it's the same with him. A calculator will help for tests and such. It is still difficult for him and he's 20. Even the making change thing. When he's out on his own, he'll have to have someone help him with things like paying bills, balancing check book etc. If you're still in high school, I am really outraged that none of your teachers has suggested testing for you. You should be on an IEP. Individual Education Plan.

Dyscalculia or just bad at math?
Q. I'm really bad at math and don't understand anything. On the other hand, I've always been pretty good at science and geometry. I always count with my fingers and I'm terrible at counting change quickly and using maps and compasses. It's really hard to pay attention in math classes, but I don't have that problem in any other subject. Am I just dumb? :(

A. No, no one is dumb :) I'm actually sure you're very intelligent, because you are asking this question about yourself. because you want to know more about how you learn, so kudos to you! No one can tell you if you have a learning disability over the Internet. Depending on your age, from what you describe, it does sounding like something to look into. Ask your teacher or guidance counselor to ring up your parents and refer you for testing... as that is the only way to know for sure. Dyscalculia or not, there are some things you can do to help yourself. 1) ask for help!!! Ask during lessons (no one ill think you're stupid), ask after your teacher finishes the lesson, ask before and after school 2) PRACTICE!!! Print work sheet of the… [cont.]
