History is the study of the human past, with special attention to the written record. Scholars who write about history are called historians. It is a field of research which uses a narrative to examine and analyse the sequence of events, and it often attempts to investigate objectively the patterns of cause and effect that determine events. Historians debate the nature of history and the lessons history teaches. A famous quote by the philosopher George Santayana has it that "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." The stories common to a particular culture, but not supported by external sources (such as the legends surrounding King Arthur) are usually classified as cultural heritage rather than the "disinterested investigation" needed by the discipline of history.

A. "The Grand" stated it eloquently. To add to that, I would say that it is a part of your heritage, something you will always have with you, that no one can take from you. You will always be a part of that family, no matter what your present circumstances are. You belong. That can't change. You will never lose it, nor can it ever be taken from you. If you don't know about your culture, you don't fully know who you are; you don't know about your "family" , or how special you, coming from such a rich heritage, and that is sad. When you learn other cultures,it gives you another perspective on life and other ways of thinking. It gives you greater understanding of the world, and considering other points of view. It enriches your life when you… [cont.]

How would history be different if Anne Boleyn died in 1528?
Q. Anne Boleyn contracted the sweating sickness and became deathly ill in the summer of 1528, five years before she was married to Henry VIII. How different do you think history would be if she had died? Just something to ponder.

A. I think it would be very different. Because yes he would have found another girl, for example Jane Seymour, but would they have had the same drive and ambition as Anne, doubtful. She was a one of a kind women who wanted more than any other women before her, not to be his mistress but a wife. A good question is "What if Emperor Charles V did not have the Pope under his control?" Then maybe the Pope would have annulled the marriage between Henry and Kathrine without any problems... What if is a fun game...

What do you think about the way history is taught in High schools and universities?
Q. There have been so many questions about Black history month. Fitting I guess considering that it's Feb. But what do you think of the way history is taught in general? Just approach the question from any direction you like from pedogy, to practice, to experience in a history class.

A. The way history is taught in high schools these days is simply awful. While the fault is often directed at the teachers, the real problem in the pedagogy lays within the hands of the administrators developing the curriculum's. The mandatory curriculum leaves teachers little leeway to go beyond the superficial drivel of the text book. The subjection of history to fit modern standards of political correctness has diluted the content to a confusing and uninspiring generality. As a history major getting set to graduate, I know that history is much more than memorizing facts, figures and dates. However, the current trend toward constant standardized testing every year in math, science and English leaves time for little else of substance to… [cont.]
