From Google News Search: "Descartes, René" I have been interested in Rene Descartes' work for quite a while now and was wondering where to start? Q. I have been interested in his work for quite a while now and was wondering what book I should start with. I am interested in the book containing the "I think therefore I am" (cogito ergo sum) philosophy but as I understand it, that is in a number of his books, so... any suggestions? As for being interested in him and not having his books yet, I'm only 16 and I need to decide on an exact book before I go out and buy one, as I'm not swimming in money I wouldn't be able to get another one for quite some time. Answered by Generalist - Thu Jan 29 09:03:10 2009 Why do people consider Rene Descartes argument "I think therefore I am" valid? Q. In theory it sounds fine, but it is full of so many flaws as it really only assumes reality after the fact and not before, also following Rene's logic only something that can think is real. Why do people still consider this a valid philosophical argument? Existence is already assumed or pre-supposed in order for thinking to occur, not that existence is concluded from that thinking Asked by Lord Zane Vorhis - Thu Sep 3 19:18:25 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Whether or not people consider it valid doesn't matter. What matters is it sounds good! And to the general public anything that sounds funny or witty is significantly more convincing than any good syllogism or boring logical statement. People love witty sayings, even when they don't mean much. Answered by Ingsoc Aaron - Thu Sep 3 19:42:47 2009 Did Descartes believe that souls wonder like ghosts?
Q. I was curious if Rene Descartes would agree that a disembodied soul is kinda like ghosts that are seen in movies? I guess another way of asking this question would be: would Descartes think that a soul has a certain size, shape, & appearance with the ability to travel from room to room (like in a haunted mansion)? Thanks. Asked by Mr. Hat & Clogs - Wed Mar 26 11:44:44 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. No. Cartesian dualism is all about atonement. Shape and/or Size? No, there was no way of justifying that state or form of the mind beyond "Cogito ergo sum". Answered by Daniel B - Wed Mar 26 11:50:19 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Descartes, René"
