Through the Roman conquest, Latin spread throughout the Mediterranean and a large part of Europe. Romance languages such as Italian, French, Catalan, Romanian, Spanish, and Portuguese are descended from Latin, while many others, especially European languages, have inherited and acquired much of their vocabulary from Latin. It was the international language of science and scholarship in central and western Europe until the 17th century, when it was gradually replaced by vernacular languages. Answered by aera - Thu Aug 9 16:05:37 2007 Why is the Greek and Latin language used for scientific naming? Q. I always thought it was different languages that correspond to the different animals, I never knew it was just Greek and Latin Asked by dfpersonn1 - Fri Jul 11 18:27:14 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. In the 17th century when Carl Linnaeus thought up the idea of naming plants and animals in Latin, the only people who were rather familiar with this language would have been those that were educated and upper class. These people went on to become scientists and doctors etc etc. So two doctors or scientists could speak two totally different languages YET still understand which plant or animal the other scientist was referring to by the Latin name. Latin provided a base language which all scientists, botanists and doctors could understand. Also, another reason is that Latin being a "dead" language the terms can never change. See, we could never use English for scientific terms because it is "alive" and constantly changing. Q. Please explain your reasons. I was surprised to read somewhere that students who studied both languages found Latin somewhat more difficult than Ancient Greek. Asked by John A - Thu Sep 17 12:19:57 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. I spent years and years studying both. I found Greek more difficult. I started learning it at age 13, but I've kept on studying it, and now use it to read whole works. The Greek alphabet, vocabulary and word formation is just a bit stranger to someone who's studied Spanish, French or any other Romance language. Since we've borrowed so many French words into English, Latin also looks a bit less foreign to English speakers. Sure, Latin has one more case (the ablative), but noun declensions and their uses are very similar in both. So are verbs and sentence structure. In fact, the grammar of Latin, Greek and Sanskrit is all surprisingly similar.
