What are short story magazines looking for in a short story?
Q. I have read these magazines, sent away for writing guidelines but my stories are still being rejected. They never give feedback and I am beginning to wonder if my stories worth writing. I read a number of writing magazines and have a degree in English Lit. Where am I going wrong? Some of the stories I have read in the magazines a re rubbish! Thanks to all three of you for your advice and thanks for the web link, Karina.

A. I don't think there's an easy answer. Sometimes the story just might not fit with the editor's view of the magazine's "vision". Or - and please don't take this personally - your story might not be up to par. In my opinion, the best "guideline" to writing good short stories is to read, analyze and learn from great short stories. A Norton Anthology of Short Stories would be a great place to begin. Also, keeping a journal really helps hone your skills. Whatever you do, don't give up writing!

What literary magazines publish subversive writing?
Q. I am trying to find places that would be willing to publish more subversive/dry short stories. All the popular magazines seem to be extremely literary and probably not interested in my style. So is there no hope? Are there any offbeat literary magazines out there? My writing has been compared to the love child of David Sedaris and Jerri Blank, if that gives you a better idea. Thanks for any suggestions.

A. Subversive, eh? Sedaris, eh? ... There's a ton. What mags have you been looking at? A lot of niche publishing magazines exist. The Idiot, The American Drivel Review just to name two that I know very well. They aren't widely distributed, but people do read them. Believe it or not, looking for short story markets is actually one of the times I think the Writer's Market is really useful. They have a huge listing of Lit Mags. (I prefer Herman's for agents.) The key with niche mags is to read at least ten back issues from the current editor. They have particular tastes that are easy to identify and play to. (In truth this is the secret to all short story markets. You write to the editor, not the audience. But what do I know?)

A. Try a book called: Artist's & Graphic Designers Market 2008 (Artist's & Graphic Designer's Market) by Erika Oconnell. It is nothing but a huge book full of places to submit your work, including publications, and their submission requirements and contact info. The book runs about 20 bucks, but well worth the investment. You can always check your local library, they may have a copy :)

How can I get my products promoted by certain magazines in their colums?
Q. HI, I am just starting out on a small venture of hand made products and I wanted to get my products promoted in magazines. I am interested in small articles that talk about new finds etc. How do we get the attention of those magazines? Do I send them my samples and pray for the best or is there a more sure fire way? I am talking about magazines like Oprah, Living, etcor any popular lifestayle magazines. I am guessing that once recommended, these products get great sales.

How do I get english magazines sent to a friend in Japan inexpensively?
Q. My friend moved to Japan with her husband about 5 months ago for his job. She's happy, but misses the comforts she's grown to know. Mostly, entertainment, like magazines. Cosmo, Elle, People, etc.. The problem is, they sell for about $20 per magazine over there. I would love to send her a subscription, but can't find a way to send it to her address in Japan.

A. You have some choices. We had our mail forwarded to us monthly. You can have your friend setup a PO Box at a Mailboxes Etc or similar business. Subscribe to the magazines and have them sent to the PO Box. The people who run the store would compile all of our mail and magazines and send them to us in Tokyo twice a month. We prepaid the PO box for 1 year and also left them a balance of $50 for forwarding our mail. When the balance became low, they would send us a note with the mail and then we send them more money via electronic check. The magazines will arrive a little later, but she will be happy. We did the same for books and also Amazon.com sends books, but not DVDs to Japan.

What agency censors magazines and other printing materials?
Q. I know the FCC censors tv and film, but are they the same agency that censors magazines, video games and books?
Asked by kayakyen - Wed Feb 13 04:25:04 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. No, usually books and magazines are censored by the publishers due to pressure from private groups. There is no government organization that censors any written materials (at least in the US), but private groups try to all the time.

How do magazines sell ads to big companies?
Q. Do magazines have to go through agencies to sell ads to big companies. If the magazine is the company's exact demographic, how does the magazine reach the bigger company?
Asked by Chanel - Wed Jul 30 21:15:08 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Big companies generally book their print advertising months in advance though agencies. Those agencies are generally the ones with the decision-making powers. Thoese agencies will take much into account when placing bookings, including things like readerships figures and independent sales auditing to make sure they get the best value for money for their client. They also use outside organisations that measure the penetration of titles - information that publishers rarely get the chance to see or question. If you're a big magazine than you can expect to get big advertisiing but if you're anything less than big it will be hard. Good luck.

A. The top magazines are the New Yorker and the Atlantic Monthly in terms of payment and prestige. If you're looking for smaller markets or the full range available, I suggest you find a copy of "Novel & Short Story Writer's Market" published by Writer's Digest Books at any bookstore or library.

Does anyone have a good idea on what to do with cooking magazines?
Q. I have 8+ years of Taste of Home, Country Woman and other magazines that all have recipes. I love cooking magazines, but I don't know what to do with them. I can't seem to bear throwing them out even tho I know the chances of me looking at them again are basically nill. Each magazine has too many recipes to cut them out and then it would just be a pile of recipes. What have others done with their old magazines?
Asked by Anchora - Thu Dec 27 13:23:12 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Get rid of them ... they are only cluttering your home. You can find great recipes on line from so many sites. Perhaps look into the magazine and see if they have a website and you can find all their recipes on line. Donate the magazines to your local library, high school or community centre.

How should i keep my vintage magazines?
Q. I have a growing collection of magazines from the 30's-70's. I like to look thru them and want to keep them accessible but safe from damage. Any ideas?
Asked by gypsy50309 - Sun May 7 02:21:22 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Might I suggest acid free paper or plastic sleeves used for photos. You can buy them at photography shops, hobby stores and craft stores This will help to keep the ink from fading or transfering off the paper as well as protect the paper types. As you know paper was milled very diffrent in the 30's than today. In fact even in the 70's paper was milled different. Ink also is a factor. Ink pigments are made with materials we do not put in inks anymore. Because of environment or health issues. Then If you can after you put them in the sleeves try to put them in a rubbermaid plastic tub instead of a cardboard box.

If you want to find recipes and information on how to cook Japanese dishes, try using any search engine and typing in what it is that you want to know. Or try some of the popular internet food sites, such as foodnetwork.com or epicurious.com or emerils.com or allrecipes.com

A. In it's current form, none of them will survive. However, I think publications like Spot.us, and the new InDenverTimes.com websites will be the new wave of the future. Spot.us, if you aren't familiar, uses readers themselves to fund stories, with interested readers pledging as little as $3 to the investigation of a story. Readers only pay and journalists only work if their estimate is reached, so everyone ends as happily as a crowd can be. A. I have a three ring binder and I have clear page inserts that I put my recipes in... I have them categorized by type of recipe (desserts, meats, cookies) etc... Also, the clear pages keep any spills/mess off recipe.. I also have my favorites in a file in my computer I can just pull up the file and print whatever recipe I'm looking for ... You can find recipe saver *books* at most book stores but I like the binder I can always customize it and add/subtract pages relatively cheaply...

Q. There is a company that distributes magazines. And it puts its company name and the magazine logo in a cover page that laid above the magazine's cover page. I saw it in many places such as, offices, hospitals, showrooms.
