Material is synonymous with substance, and is anything made of matter – hydrogen, air and water are all examples of materials. Sometimes the term "material" is used more narrowly to refer to substances or components with certain physical properties that are used as inputs to production or manufacturing. In this sense, materials are the parts required to make something else, from buildings and art to stars and computers. A material can be anything: a finished product in its own right or an unprocessed raw material. Raw materials are first extracted or harvested from the earth and divided into a form that can be easily transported and stored, then processed to produce semi-finished materials. These can be input into a new cycle of production and finishing processes to create finished materials, ready for distribution, construction, and consumption. An example of a raw material is cotton, which is harvested from plants. Cotton can be processed into thread (also considered a raw material), which can then be woven into cloth, a semi-finished material. Cutting and sewing the fabric turns it into a garment, which is a finished product. Steelmaking is another example – raw materials in the form of ore are mined, refined and processed into steel, a semi-finished material. Steel is then used as an input in many other industries to make finished products. In chemistry materials can be divided into two metals and non-metals. From Wikipedia under the

Q. I know the main materials are steel, aluminum, and titanium. Each has their own good points, but what material would you use if you were to make your own frame? Asked by woosaw - Wed Nov 28 02:12:22 2007 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments A. Steel was the norm many many years ago. It is heavier and cannot take a few hits like aluminum. Aluminum can take a few dents and keep on being ridden without cracking (moderate sized dents). In some cases Aluminum is even better because yokes can be made of cnc aluminum which is not just aesthetically pleasing but it can provide you with more clearance and strength. But 7005 Aluminum is very popular, 6061 T-6 aluminum is good, cheap and easier to work with but I heard it can be hard to reweld if you should ever crack your frame. Titanium is strong, a flexy feel (in a good way) to it but it is too expensive for a lot of people. I'd like to see more Scandium frames, they are lighter than 7005 Aluminum and strong as well. Q. My science class was assigned to do a roller coaster project. I don't know what materials I should use. We have to have one loop, and a marble has to be able to go on it and complete the roller coaster. Asked by Sasha Leigh - Tue Mar 24 09:14:41 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I would personally look at using something flexible and strong at the same time. If a marble has to be able to run the track you will need 2 running parallel with each other, so you will need some sort of support from one track to another, like a railway line. depending on how long the track has to run depends on what to make it from really. a longer track will require less friction to enable the marble to run further. I would recommend you put the loop near the start to make sure the marble has enough energy to make the full loop. For the supports, i would look at something like lolly-pop sticks, as they are easy to cut to the length you need and are strong enough for the support. For the actual track i would look at something round and… [cont.] Answered by Jetsan - Tue Mar 24 10:06:45 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Materials" See also:
