A. You are not bad at math. Perhaps you are not comfortable enough with it. The best, and really only, remedy is to practise, and practise more, and when you get it *continue* practising so you remember it forever and you don't have to relearn it. The best way to avoid math-panic is by gaining an intuitive feel for it. Math has a subtle beauty which is not well communicated. It must be discovered. For me, this came when I learned the basics of calculus. You are right on the money about the importance of math in your veterinary career. Keep that in mind when you feel discouraged. Knowing things matter really motivates learning. Drop me a line if you like. Perhaps I can help you with some sticky issue. Good luck.

A. Try a program called Teaching Textbooks. They are expensive ($185), but well worth it. You can do it on the computer or in the book. My son actually likes math now after using this program!

A. I really did not like Math until I had a tutor, that explained everything again. What I realized then was we were just going over the examples in the book. How simple is that. So I figured I could do that by myself...and check the answers in the back of the book to make sure I did it correct. So 1. Do the example. 2. Check the answers in the back of the book (usually the odd ones). **Most Important** practice practice practice have scratch paper around practice redoing the problems over and over again until you are comfortable Do your homework. Be prepared, get enough sleep. don't procrastinate, ask questions if you are not sure, take a deep breath before a test. Good Luck! :)

A. Math "anxiety" could be prevented by taking a different approach to teaching math. If a student doesn't understand an equation, another equation isn't going to help the student understand! Teachers should try teaching math by using words more and numbers less. If a student doesn't understand the concept of an equation, they are not going to be able to solve the equation. Also, drilling--lots of practice makes a person comfortable with math. Confidence is the key to success.

Math: Math Anxiety? Who has it? How do you deal with it?
Q. Ok, I again started to have math anxiety way before I even start the semester (it starts on August and I don't know why Im getting these anxiety attacks) and want to know if anyone else has had this problem. I usually fear math basically because I do have fear of success and failure at the same time. My biggest weakness in math is anything higher than basic, so stuff like pre-algebra and above will give me problems. My friend says "its easy" but if thats the case why am I having problems? I don't want to deal with special ed versions of math anymore, I just want to face the challenge right then and there. Anyone been through this? Please help! Rules: 1)Describe your math anxiety if you have one. 2)Tell me how you dealt with it. 3)And did… [cont.]

A. I've taught mathematics for 20 years, I teach from very low levels to very high levels, a different kind of anxiety in the higher level than the lower level. At the lower level the fine line between motivated and overmotivated is really important. You cannot be in protect mode and growth mode at the same time*. IOW fear causes a restriction of blood to the higher-level thinking part of your brain, and it makes it very hard to do math. Here's a few very simple things you can do to overcome this, and this works for stress in general: 1) try to learn to "like" math, learn to develop a very child like curiosity towards why and how math works, including concepts about infinity, like how big are some of the biggest numbers?? is their… [cont.]

Math Anxiety, anyone else, please help? ?
Q. I'm pretty sure I have math anxiety. I'm in Grade 12 and have to take a grade 11 math. I've been told by many teachers that I was not right for the course.. actually they said it meaner. I'm to scared to be in that class and I need a way out of it. I have an IEP but the school just doesn't recognize it. I was supposed to fail Grade 9 with a 40 but the math teacher brought me up to a 50 so he didn't have to see me next year. I failed grade 10 with a 45 then went to summer school where I failed with a 44. Last year I was in Credit Recovery and was failing that with a 32 when the math teacher finally started helping me. Math anxiety. Can you help?
Q. I'm taking a developmental algebra class in college right now and for the first time in my life I'm developing math anxiety. It's not only with tests either. I get anxious and freeze up if someone who is trying to help me, asks me a question like ok, what is the next step? Or, what happens when you do this or that? It doesn't who it is either. At first the panic only came with the instructor, then it started coming on with the tutor. Now it's so bad, I don't even want to ask my husband for help. I can't even do math if he's standing near me or watching me. I feel hopeless right now. I'm not normally the anxious type. This feeling is foreign to me. Please, give me some encouragement. Has anyone you knew actually gotten over it? [cont.]

A. Math anxiety is pretty common. I had it in college too and it seemed to develop when I finally got to the level where the class was a prerequisite. Okay so now you know. the basic steps to combat it is to develop a routine for studying and taking the tests. my routtine was. 1 Fix the time I go to sleep and make it at least 8 hrs. 2. no coffee after 5 pm. no studying between 5 and 7 pm (there has to be some sanity in this) 3. deep breaths and a calm demeanor... grasshopper. I know it sounds corny. but you cant let anyone push you out of the zone. The zone is after youve done about a solid hour of problems you know well and can answer question about. confidence is big part of this. you cant get it from others. you have to… [cont.]

A. I have to pass my current math class to move on in my degree. I know the stress, especially because math is my absolute worst subject. The best thing you could do at this point is to get tutoring, set up a study group with others in your class and go to your professor's office hours. I started a homework group with a few people from class where we can work on our assignments together. It's really helped me out so far. If your school has a tutoring center, go check it out and sign up. The people working there should be math geniuses and can answer a ton of your questions. Also, even if you think your professor is a terrible teacher, if you go visit him in his office, he'll have more time to help YOU specifically and maybe he won't move so… [cont.]

adult student w/ math anxiety?
Q. I am an adult college student. All I have left is one math class. It's online, so I have to motivate myself. Everytime I sit down to do it, I get anxious. I remember every bad math experience I have ever had. How can I get over this? This is the last class I need to open a door to a better future.
Asked by S - Thu Oct 22 11:23:44 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Relax. Since the class is online that means you can be in an environment that you choose. So find a place with minimal distractions, this could be your home, the library, a bookstore, or wherever you choose. I have math anxiety too but I control it so that it doesn't control me. When you do assignments don't think about your past math experiences because that is what is holding you back. Just focus on the assignment that you're doing. Obviously you can do it because you've completed all of your other classes, so that must mean your pretty smart. Stay positive and study and pray and don't worry about it!

A. Accept math as a challenge to overcome, not something that can hurt you. 5X^2-7=0 Now, you may not be able to solve this incomplete quadratic equation, but I do not see it jumping off the paper and biting you. That is all math is; just squiggles on paper.

A. Math was my favorite subject in school. But, with any subject, I listened to the teacher. I took the teacher at his word. If I got an answer wrong on a test that he told us was right, I questioned him on front of the whole class. I rarely took notes because I paid so close attention to what was said by the teacher. I always tried to finish homework in school and almost never took a book home. But, just because that worked for me doesn't mean it will work for anyone else. I only received an honorable mention when I graduated. Perhaps I would have received honors if I had taken a book home more oftern and studied.

How to raise my SAT math score and avoid anxiety?
Q. Here are my usual practice test ranges: Critical Reading- 770-800 Writing-770-800 Math-580-660 Those would be good if I were planning to major in some sort of linguistics but I've decided to study mathematics also throughout my years at college. I'm looking at a college with rigorous maths courses and they won't accept anyone without a good score. Do you have any suggestion for raising my Math score? I'm a pretty good math student in general and I know all the general strategies for the SAT, so I would appreciate some particular formulas or strategies. Also, how should I reduce test anxiety? I tend to get nervous, especially when I'm not sitting at my own desk at home. I know this from taking the PSAT. Ouch.

Does anyone else have really bad trouble with math?
Q. I'm about to take a math placement test at my community college and I'm scared to death, because if I mess it up I will have to take remedeal courses for no credit that will delay my graduation. I've already taken most of my other subjects. I've always had horrible experiences with math in high school, and I've put off taking the math placement test as long as possible. I also had to take reading and writing placement tests and I had no problem at all, in fact I placed in honors level English classes. But when I try to do algebra or geometry it's like there's a mental block. If someone sits with me they will have to explain it over and over again to me and then I will sort of understand, but as soon as I go home I forget it again. … [cont.]

A. First relax, take a deep breath and DON'T PANIC! If you're good at writing then you can be good at math. In fact I've taught people math who said they could never do math. I work for a casino and have to teach people to multiplied numbers in their head in less to two weeks. Now for your mental block, try this write little stories, make them easy to remember. Some like for division, When Mr. A is on top or Mrs. A then make 1 baby. that would be abc/ac = what? Mr. A is on top of Mrs A. so they make 1 abc/a = 1bc/1c or bc/c Same thing for c bc/c = 1b/1 or b Try it. It might help if it doesn't try something else. Hope it helps.
