A mathematical notation is a system of symbolic representations of mathematical objects and ideas. Mathematical notations are used in mathematics and the physical sciences, engineering and economics. Mathematical notations include relatively simple symbolic representations, such as numbers 1 and 2, function symbols sin and +; conceptual symbols, such as lim, dy/dx, equations and variables; and complex diagrammatic notations such as Penrose graphical notation and Coxeter-Dynkin diagrams.

fact Euclid used it in his geometry We don t have any contemporary versions of Euclid But a few hundred years later there are at least versions of Euclid Here s one written in Greek And what you can see on these geometrical figures are points symbolically labeled with Greek letters And in the description of theorems there are lots of things where points and lines

What does the mathematical notation "cis" stand for?
Q. e.g. not sure what 8cis(180) means
Asked by groovybaby33 - Thu Apr 24 09:58:07 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Its not all that a popular notation but cis t is short for (cos t + i sin t), making cis t = e^it by Euler's relation. Its just convenient when introducing the polar form of a complex number without the exponential form since its shorter to write. 8 cis (180) means (assuming 180 is degrees, but when dealing with complex numbers or any higher mathematics onward from that it is better to use radian measure. This becomes pi radians) 8 cis (pi) = 8. e^i.pi = 8. (cos pi + i sin pi) = -8

Does the Semicolon ";" mean anything in any standard mathematical notation?
Q. I ask because I think we need ONE concise symbol to hold the meaning: "...times base to the power of..." No, I mean like a million is "1;6" and you could read "One sem six."
Asked by A Box of Signs - Mon Apr 9 14:18:26 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A full colon is used in set theory, but I think the semicolon is available. But if you mean something like "three to the power four equals 81", we use the carat: 3^4 = 81.

Mathematical Notation: {a : b exists [c,d]} ?
Q. {a : b epsilon [c,d]} How does this translate? What books, articles, online resources can you recomend to help me learn these types of notations?
Asked by shellsandscripts - Fri Jun 2 11:17:19 2006 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. That reads: the set of a such that b is in the range of c and d. This doesn't say much without knowing a relationship between a and b. This sort of notation is documented in most introductory set theory texts.
