Should cities in the Middle East start initiatives to paint the roofs white in them to lower temps?
Q. Don't these cities have a heat island effect just like cities in hot locations everywhere do that could be lessened by doing this? It seems like the hotter the city the more it could gain from lowering the tempatures in it even a few degrees. I'm not sure how much air conditioning is used in the middle east but it seems to me that if the cities were a few degrees cooler then the energy demands from those air conditioners would also drop. Wouldn't this be a way for tens of thousends of the people from the poor and middle classes to find good honest work and help to more equally distribute wealth? Also doesn't violence bubble to the surface faster and more intensely the hotter it is?

A. that would be a good idea. however, there would not be a noticeable difference in the average temp of the region. keep in mind that roofs constitute something like 0.0001% of the surface area of the region. (yes, that's a guess, but the percentage is very low.) on the other hand, it would lower their energy bill, which would be a good thing. however, if someone would invent a street surface that was white, and as cheap and reliable as tar, that would be a very good thing. all over the world. (well in all the warm parts of the world.)
