Where in New Mexico can I see the Rocky Mountains?

A. In the northcentral part of New Mexico is where you can see the Rocky Mountains in New Mexico. Carlsbad Caverns is fantastic to see, especially if you like caves. They have several different cave tours just for kids. They have a bat flight program at night, which your 9 year old would probably enjoy. For more information on Carlsbad Caverns:

How do you become a resident of New Mexico for university purposes?
Q. How do I become a resident of New Mexico so I can save money going to New Mexico State University? Thanks for answering.
Asked by algidstorm - Mon Nov 3 17:14:32 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. This works in almost all states: 1) move to New Mexico and rent/buy a place to live. 2) get a NM driver's license/insurance and register to vote in your new district. 3) get a job in your new town (in NM) and pay income tax to NM. do this for a year and viola! you're a resident. Careful though - many schools will declare you to be a resident of whatever your parent's home is unless you qualify as an independent student. Most college students don't qualify as independent.

A. Head for your nearest bookstore or library and browse the travel guides on New Mexico to find things that particularly interest you. This can depend on exactly when you're going depending on what interesting festivals or exhibitions may be going on. You can also try sites like: or or . My US home is in Colorado, not so far from New Mexico. Some of the places I particularly like are: Chaco Canyon - , the Enchanted Circle Drive, Taos, Old Town Albuquerque, and the Petroglyph monument

How does New Mexico mainly make money now and in the past?
Q. States have different sorts of income, like Florida is a big tourist attraction. What is New Mexico and what was New Mexico used for in the past, like early 1900's. I need to know this for a project, thanks.

A. Nowadays, New Mexico does depend a lot on tourism. However, we have several military bases such as Holloman Air Force Base near Alamogordo and Kirkland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, Cannon (I think it's Air Force Base) in Clovis and, most importantly, White Sands Missile Range. We have scientific sites such as the Los Alamos Nuclear Labs and Sandia Labs (in Albuquerque). A hundred years ago, mining was important. The town of Madrid is now a ghost town but it was a mining town in the 1800's. Silver City was, ironically, a place most known for it's copper mines! (It still has Phelps-Dodge mines operating to this very day.) Truth or Consequences and Hillsboro were mining towns. I'm sure there were many others. Farming and ranching… [cont.]

Can I cross border to Mexico and return for new 90 day USA tourist visa?
Q. Hi. I'm an Aussie, currently in the US under the 90 day tourist waiver scheme. I really want to stay longer. At the end of the 90 days, can I just go to Mexico for a week and then come back and get a new stamp for another 90 days tourist visa, or do I have to go to Canada?
Asked by Fi - Wed Dec 16 11:09:55 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Nope. Canada won't work either. You would have to return to Australia (or at least leave North America). You agreed to that when you traveled under the VWP. As per the US Embassy in Canberra: What if I enter on the Visa Waiver Program and then decide I want to stay longer than the 90 days? You cannot extend the time on the Visa Waiver Program. The 90 days also includes any time spent in Canada, Mexico and adjacent Islands. Therefore you cannot cross the border into these areas and then return for another 90 days. You can however ask for re-entry on the Visa Waiver Program if you have left the Continent.

What time of year is the best time to visit New Mexico?

A. Depends on what part of New Mexico but, generally, autumn because the southern part off the state gets BAD windstorms in the spring and the dust is so thick you sometimes can't see the road and can have an accident around Lordsburg, Deming or Las Cruces. It's pretty hot in the summer and the vegetation is pretty dull in the winter though we do have nice ski resorts if you're into that sort of thing. Taos and Ruidoso are go ski areas and have tourist attractions all year round.

A. All I remember from flying to or from Phoenix a while back was how it looked like there were ski slopes in the Albuquerque area and also south of Phoenix, though it's hard to imagine how there could be ski slopes in the latter area. But not all the Southwest is actually a desert in strict terms, so depending on where you're flying to or from you should see more than just desert areas. Along the way you're sure to see notable cities, even if you don't recognize them at the time. Of course, this all assumes you're not flying above a large cloud cover. But even when that happens, that's sometimes a good thing.

What to see/do in and around Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico?
Q. I'm going to be visiting Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico for a few days, and would like to hear some suggestions from previous visitors and locals on what to be sure to see and do there. Definitely include anything interesting and worthwhile in the surrounding area too, as a little driving (1-2 hour radius) is not a problem. If there are any particular cliff dwellings that are not to be missed, or that are better than the others, I'd love to hear about those, as well. Thanks so much for your help! Oh, and the trip will be in early/mid June, if any of your suggestions are dependent on the time of year.
