Are we best served by a News media that focuses on personal problems or national problems?
Q. Are we best served by our news media when it focuses on personal issues rather that national ones? A crises in a families life may be of immediate local concern but does it serve us for the national media to spend hours and days on issues that are in essence personal. Would it not be better if the media would focus on National issues that affect us daily? Will Paris Hilton or Mike Vic's problems affect any of us? What about health care, crime, jobs, housing, unemployment, racism, government corruption, gas prices, how are the tax dollars being spent and why are we still in a war that many of believe is wrong. Why does the news media not report viable candidates for President, who have a great plan that pays for itself
Q. See Morris Kent Thompson's positions on you tube, he has a direction and vision that will lead the country out of depression and back to prosperity. How come the news media don't let us know?

A. I like Bob Barr, but you don't see anything on him either. Glenn Beck did have him on last week. That's it. The media has already decided who the candidates are. It is shameful.

Why does our US news media rank by total medals and not by total gold medals for the Olympic games?
Q. According to the International Olympic Committee, The ranking is sorted by the number of gold medals. In a gold medal tie, the ranking is then sorted by the number of silver medals, and in a gold + silver medal tie, the ranking is then sorted by the number of bronze medals. As such, aren't most US news media, including Yahoo! Olympic coverage, intentionally misleading us when they rank by total medal instead of gold medals?
Asked by Anne - Sun Aug 17 23:19:13 2008 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Why do the US media do it this way? I don't know, but there is no logic to it and no-one else in the world does it this way. Certainly not the IOC and contrary to what someone else said - this does matter, because they are the governing body. It's not up to anyone else to determine what medals mean. The system used by the US media means that 15 Bronze medals are worth more than than 10 Gold and 4 Silver which is clearly nonsense. You could perhaps award a number of points for each type of medal, but such a system could be weighted in so many different ways that there could never be any agreement. There may be a precedent for this if you look at the New York Times article from 1912 it says that the USA won the Olympics with the most points.… [cont.]

Are the masses really leaning Obama or is the news media steering them in that direction?
Q. Do you believe the polls right now? Are people really leaning heavily towards Obama or is the news media steering them and the polls in that direction? Leading by 4 or 5 points is not a landslide in my opinion.
Asked by suzy - Sun Jul 27 08:38:56 2008 - - 25 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The polls are always skewed democratic. look at the Gore/Bush and Kerry/Bush elections- The democrats were ahead in every poll. The media fawning over Obama is hurting him more than helping him. Most Americans are disgusted by this- and we don't want CNN or MSNBC telling us how to run our country.

Why is the news media, seemingly, trying to use its influence to destroy the world economy?
Q. Maybe things are a little bit bad. But the news media seems to be pushing for things to be worse. I even know of a few people who have been laid off in preemptive lay-offs; the company that laid them off, technically, wasn't hurting yet. But they laid them off because they expected to be hurting in the future, mostly because of new reports and forecasts.

Why does the news media always criticize India for its poverty?
Q. Yesterday (Aug 15) was India's 60th Independence Day and on BBC was a report to show a native man's trip back home to India. He was known as one of the midnight babies born on Aug 15, 1947. He goes back to India and all BBC shows is India's poverty and students (age of 7-10) saying that they would like to study abroad. what is the meaning of showing something like this on indian independence??? My point is there are other places around the world that have it a lot worse than India. India is a nation where many successful doctors, engineers, and businessmen are educated from. India is only poor in some regions like many other countries. How come it is that the news media does not criticize China or Pakistan or half of the african… [cont.]

A. I think maybe you're a little sensitive about India. The media certainly criticize other parts of the world, especially Africa. However, the BBC might be laughing up it's sleeve at the huge and rich colony that got away, implying that if India had not become independent but had stayed part of the Empire they'd be better off now. Of course, no one can say if that's true.

A. I am against it. A free media is one of the cornerstones of democracy. The only times that I think that the media should be censored is if they are promoting violence, or in time of war if their actions endanger our troops.

Does anyone else think the news media is politically biased?
Q. I am SO sick of seeing the faces of Obama and Clinton, I could vomit! Is the news media politically biased? It seems like they're speaking as if either of those two Democrats will win the presidency, and no one else is even running. I know I'm not voting for Obama or Clinton, but I feel like nobody's really covering the Republican side of the presidential race to give Americans a fair look at the candidates.

Q. What are the contradictions concerning the news media's view of itself?
Asked by Built4War - Thu May 8 23:55:57 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. OK, so you got some opinions on this, yet the contradictions were side stepped for a couple of political positions. For example, a lot of people think that not finding nuclear weapons in Iraq indicated failure of the policy to preempt Iraq from getting them. That is an example of the "propaganda" extant over the past several years that makes no sense, but that has also been trumpeted by the same media (or passively accepted, on the part of some). Simple as it is, the opposite is true since if we had found nuclear weapons in Iraq we would have been too late to preempt their presence. While it is the chicken and egg issue, it makes a lot more sense to be pleased that they did not have them since they easily could have, given the… [cont.]

A. The mainstream media has completely rejected its role as the people's watchdog over government activities. The "Fourth Estate" is no longer a respected, credible source for news or public information. Run by skilled corporate beancounters - whose only objective is profit - the giant news conglomerates have long ago forgotten their responsibility to the American people (which is why fewer and fewer of us read daily newspapers or listen to the big three network 'news'casts anymore). I can give you an example of something I believe, but has not been reported accurately in the media, even though it is imperative and relevant to this insane, immoral Iraqi 'war': The number-one non-military 'benchmark' that the Bush administration is pushing for… [cont.]

A. I don't think you can find a percentage of how often they cover it. I am sure you can search for how many times an article comes up with "homeless" in its title, but since there isn't any single source that tells how many times media talks about subjects, it is nearly impossible to get a percentage.

Granted that I don't know much about American politics, but I am an American Jew living in Israel, and I am very glad of the US's involvement. It is nice to have one ally, one friend in the whole darn world who actually agrees that Israel has a right to defend itself from the thousands of missiles fired on it, from death and destruction. I mean, the whole north of Israel is mostly empty, except for some folks who are too old or too poor to go anywhere else. People's homes are destroyed. Is this a normal situation?! Will the news media be attacked for being too soft on McCain/Palin just like the media was blamed after the invasion of Iraq? If this society is a democracy, why are the same people controlling the news media pretty much all the time?
Q. Instead of some narrow-minded narcissist like Ann Coulter or a socially myopic Robert Novak getting all of the "air-time" or "news print," why are there no shows or news in which common people are offered equal time. If the subject is homelessness, I don't need to hear hours of mindless blather from uncaring, hatemongering republicans; I would probably listen if there were some homeless people given a chance to speak for themselves, and given an opportunity to put forth some creative ideas and solutions though. It's not possible to have a democracy when the news media is controlled by the "haves," to the exclusion of the "have-nots." Moreover it seems to be beyond salvage, as no one is challenging it. People seem to think it's "cool"… [cont.]
