A numeral system (or system of numeration) is a writing system for expressing numerals, and a mathematical notation for representing numbers of a given set, using graphemes or symbols in a consistent manner. It can be seen as the context that allows the numeral "11" to be interpreted as the binary numeral for three, the decimal numeral for eleven, or other numbers in different bases.

Ideally, a numeral system will:

  • Represent a useful set of numbers (e.g. all whole numbers, integers, or real numbers)
  • Give every number represented a unique representation (or at least a standard representation)
  • Reflect the algebraic and arithmetic structure of the numbers.

For example, the usual decimal representation of whole numbers gives every whole number a unique representation as a finite sequence of digits, with the operations of arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) being present as the standard algorithms of arithmetic. However, when decimal representation is used for the rational or real numbers, the representation is no longer unique: many rational numbers have two numerals, a standard one that terminates, such as 2.31, and another that recurs, such as 2.309999999... . Numerals which terminate have no non-zero digits after a given position. For example, numerals like 2.31 and 2.310 are taken to be the same, except in the experimental sciences, where greater precision is denoted by the trailing zero.

Numeral systems are sometimes called number systems, but that name is misleading, as it could refer to different systems of numbers, such as the system of real numbers, the system of complex numbers, the system of p-adic numbers, etc. Such systems are not the topic of this article.

What are some advantages and disadvantages of using the Roman Numeral System?
Q. What are some modern uses of Roman Numerals?

A. Roman numerals appeared around 500 bce disadvantages: I. The seven basic symbols could only express numbers up to 5000. Special symbols/considerations had to be devised for say...87000. II. Roman Numerals were sometimes confused with Roman Letters. Numbers have a line above them. III. Needed to know the special rules to understand them (smaller numbers preceding larger numbers were subtracted etc) IV. No fractions, no zero. V. Produced a privileged caste of specialist professional calculators. Required an auxiliary aid such as an abacus to perform calculations. advantages I. Base 10 II. Served as a basis to 'start' East Indian Mathematics which eventually fed to the Arabs that invented/discovered zero. III. Similar in… [cont.]

A. i know that IV to V is a cadence (or is that V to IV) i haven't done this for ages... but, no, there is no cheating, if you want to be good then you have to work at it and be uncomfortable and spend lots of time memmorising things!!! Mabey you could make a memmory game (that card flipping thing where you gotta get 2 of the same cards) but with I and i etc. does anybody know what the hell i'm talking about lol!?

In a different numeral system there are only 3 symbols: @, #, & a table of addition facts is shown...?
Q. + | @ # & --- @ | & @ # # | @ # & & | # & @ Does this system have an identity element for addition? If so what? Use the table and the missing addend definition of subtraction to find the value of @ - # and how you arrived at your answer.

A. The # symbol is the identity element. Notice in either the row with # or the column with #, when anything is added to #, you get whatever it was you were adding to it. Based on this definition, we can see that if we have @ - # this will give you @ since you are subtracting zero from @.
