What are som discrepencies in the media regarding past events?
Q. I'm writing a paper on the media and I'm including speculations in the media with past events. Like how there is much evidence that disproves terrorist involvement in 9/11, but through the media, we are told something different. I'd like it if you didn't comment on 9/11, but bring up other events in the past where there are disagreements and speculations about what really happened though no one can be certain. Lolz I spelled some wrong...

How do events from your past influence your choices today?
Q. I tend to look at the past events in my life as learning experiences so that I can avoid the same thing from happening again - and usually delve right in to a situation. But I've seen where others become afraid and are unwilling to risk again because of the fear that if will happen the same way again.
Asked by Rabbit - Tue Jul 17 16:14:01 2007 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, I can understand where that fear is coming from. I also see the importance of holding on to your past in a sense. So this is what I do: I silently acknowledge my past and everything that happened in it. And I ONLY assoicate my past and my memories with neutral or sensory experiences. I never allow my past to become attached with any emotions. Because letting your past become an emotional experience means that you are too engaged or haven't gotten over it/ still haven't learned from your mistakes. So, the best thing to really do is to acknowledge your past, and the lessons that lie within, but to watch from a careful distance, so as to not allow it to own your life. I guess my point is that the past should remain in the past, but… [cont.]

How to prevent bad memories/past events from coming up?
Q. A lot of the time, what really gets me down is when I think. When I think, it leads to bad events or memories from my past. They make me feel really bad, and this doesn't help my depression or suicidal thoughts to decrease. So I was wondering, is there any way to stay as a positive thinker? Is there a way to prevent these bad memories from coming up? And if there is no way to stop them, is there anything I can do so that they don't bother me as much?

A. Learning to meditate can be a great tool. Meditation allows you to put your mind in a peaceful state where you can just "be" - all of the outside stuff, positive or negative, can just kind of be by the side for a bit. It's very refreshing. When you get good at going into a meditative state, you can put your mind there quickly and let the bad thought go...just know that it takes practice, but its totally worth it. There are many books out there on the subject, religious and non-religious. Or, you can simply practice by going to a relaxing setting and focusing on your breathing. When thoughts of any kind invade, do your best to let them drop and go back to focusing on your breathing and just "being." Forgive yourself if you mind… [cont.]

A. Have you ever heard the phrase, "there are two sides to every story?" It is so in history. Every person who tells a story tells it through the lens of their own understanding. If you asked in 1865, "what was the civil war fought over", you would have gotten vastly different answers from a northerner, a southerner, an african-american, a deserter who left and went out west or south to Argentina, an American Indian, a European. Eventually, we settled upon the story that is told in our history books. But there are enough written records remaining to tell you that not everybody living in 1865 would have agreed with what we are teaching in the schools today. There are numerous examples of this throughout history, and even in today's world.… [cont.]

History, is there any value to trying to obtain as accurate an understanding of past events like World War II ?
Q. What are some dangers of holding mythic versions of the past? Another way of thinking about this issue: is there any value to trying to obtain as accurate an understanding of past events like World War II as possible? Or should we just believe a sugar-coated vision of what we would like the past to be? What are the effects of historical myth?

A. Beware historical myth. It's the enemy of true historians. History is based on verifiable fact backed up by balanced research that comes to reasonable conclusions. It's up to the consumer to decide whether the conclusions are justified by the facts presented.

Why do our memories perceive past events as being better than when they actually happened?
Q. Is it common to look back at past memories with such fond recollection, that they appear better than when the event transpired itself. I'm referring to pleasant memories or just memories of an event that might have benign in itself, but meant something personally to you. Does this happen to you when you look back? Is this a common way for people to think?
Asked by cap3382 - Wed Feb 14 13:35:55 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, bravo! Memory is more like dreams than video tape. I studied memory in grad school for a semester, and they actually did this study: When the Challenger blew up, this one psychologist had the presence of mind to go around to all his colleagues, in that very hour, and ask them to write down what they were doing when they heard the news. (This was one of those events that everyone remembers what they were doing for the rest of their life). He collected all the papers. Then five years later, he went around to all of them again and asked them again to write down what they were doing when they heard. There was WIDE discrepancy! Even on something like that. Memory is entirely fluid, not at all strictly accurate.

What are the Past and Current Events associated with the Mayan Calendar's Predictions?
Q. I've herd from many that there are a lot of past and current events which have been predicted on the Mayan calendar, does anyone know what they are?
Asked by Om... - Sun Mar 11 20:41:10 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. According to some predictions on December 21, 2012, the black hole in the center of the galaxy, Earth and the Sun will form a straight line. This will reverse the polarity of the Earth causing it to do a 180 degree flip with the south pole now being the north pole. It's a very interesting concept. Many people think there are a lot of predictions of Nostradamus which have come true. The problem is too many "armchair scientists" get too much publicity and too many people are willing to listen. If December 21, 2012 is to be "judgment day" for planet earth, I wouldn't count on it. The Mayan Calendar might only go that far because the given cycle ends. From that point, it just might go back to the beginning of the calendar and start over...sort… [cont.]

A. No. If your reasoning is correct, there would be no advancement in the sciences. New theories are developed because observation reveals the old ones to be false. New products would not be invented with the advertising campaigns to sell them.

When a person is having a split personality disorder, how can remember past events?
Q. I mean he has two personalities, is he really aware of it or is it only one personality he is conscious with?
Asked by princess121212121212 - Fri Feb 6 23:11:29 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. there is a primary personality that is conscious most of the time and remembers most of the individuals life. But when trauma, fear, stress etc trigger the individual to dissociate another personality comes into the consciousness and interacts with the world for a time. This causes periods of time to be lost for the primary personality where they do not recall the memories that occured during the dissacoication when the other personality was active. Sort of like an alcoholic blackout. The individual is conscious and engaging in activities but has no recollection of them when the black out is over. Except here the blackout is caused by severe dissociation and long term early trauma. As a person gets therapy they may become more aware… [cont.]

What events in the past 50 years can be related to the Jena "6" incident?
Q. What racially charged/motivated events in the past 50 years are similar to the Jena "6" case. What events are very similar to it?
Asked by wnnagetdirrty82787 - Mon Oct 8 18:59:03 2007 - - 6 Answers - 2 Comments

A. You do realise that what happened in Jena has been exagerated? At the most, some white kid insulted a black kid and then the black kid (who had a history of violence) with some of his black friends jumped the white kid from behind and beat him bloody. There was enough mess done to the white kid that people thought he was dead. All the other stuff about nooses etc had nothing to do with racism. Nooses are commonly used during halloween and other times as a representation of death and as sick humour, the same with skulls. The nooses in this case were to do with an upcoming sports match against another school. The coverage in the main media has tried to create a racial issue out of this because it sells more papers.

A. Our view of how historical events unfold changes ever so slightly with newly discovered evidence and sound theories. A historian tends to specialize in one or two periods of antiquity and they will have a considerable background knowledge in respect to their chosen field. They will also be aware of most of the previous academic writing by other historians who research similar avenues. They also have access to valuable primary source evidence which was created during the period in which they are interested and they have the mental tools with which to dissect it fairly. I've lost count of the number of times on here that I've seen the old chestnut, 'History was written by the winners' and is thus one sided, well maybe so, but a proper… [cont.]

Q. i need help on this essay question and i cant find anything in my book that would be good i need help please someone help me
Asked by Alex - Wed Sep 16 19:42:28 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Generally speaking, We don't have the facts about what happened during past events, at best we have witness accounts but witnesses don't know it all and can also have jumped into incorrect conclusions. Other than that we have stories told through generations before being put into writing and that's not a reliable source of information. By taking what we know about the event and applying scientific tests we can come much closer to the real truth and in some cases is can also help us understand the people that was there and how they acted and why.

A. It is always best to be honest with her, especially when it comes to past relationships. If she finds out you've hidden details from her, you'll look guilty of something. If she keeps talking about them and it bothers you, let her know and ask her to stop. However, if it is something that happened recently while you were together, she is just letting off steam. If she is putting you down for things from a long time ago, even after you asked her to stop, then that is a big red flag. She's most likely doing it to put you down and make herself feel superior. A girl who is mindful of your feelings won't continue to upset you. Personally I wouldn't stay with a girl that does it purely for her own selfish reasons, but if she stops after you let… [cont.]
