Religious Schooling in America Private Education and Public Life Advocates of religious schooling have frequently had to answer the charge that what they supported was un-American. In a book that is more than just a history, Jones tries to make sense of that charge by tracing the development of religious schooling over the last 125 years. He explores the rationale for religious schooling, not just on the part of those who choose it for their children, but also in terms of its impact on the community as a whole, and he considers the arguments of those who criticize such schools for undermining efforts to promote national unity. Near the end of the 19th century, publicly financed, publicly administered schooling emerged as the default educational arrangement for American children. But this supremacy has not gone unchallenged. The sectarian schools that, in fact, predate public education in America have survived, even thrived, over the past century. Multiple religious communities, including those that opposed sectarian schooling in earlier generations, have now embraced it for their children. The author charts the growth of this educational strategy--and the debate surrounding it--through the 20th century by focusing on the gradual embrace of sectarian schooling by different religious communities in America, particularly Catholics, Jews, and later, conservative Protestants (mainly in the form of homeschooling). He also considers Muslim schools, not currently a force in private schooling or the subject of much debate, but perhaps next in line to make their case for a place in America's educational landscape. |

Private School (DVD) Sex Comedy DVD - Three of the hallmarks of education in America -- nudity, teenage sex, and big, destructive gags -- are on plentiful display in this teen comedy. Christine (Phoebe Cates), a student at an exclusive all-girls private school, is in love with Jim (Matthew Modine), who attends an academy for boys nearby. Christine's archrival Jordan (Betsy Russell) also has her eye on Jim, and she is willing to do whatever she can to steal him away. Jim's ber-slob buddy Bubba (Michael Zorek) is going with Betsy (Kathleen Wilhoite), Christine's cynical friend, though he would probably be unfaithful if any other woman were willing to get near him. Bubba and his pals sneak into the girls' school dressed in drag in hopes of reaching the Promised Land (better known as the women's shower room), while Christine and Jim run away together for the weekend, though their escapade isn't as romantic as they had hoped. Among the adults observing the chaos are Ray Walston, Fran Ryan, Martin Mull, and Sylvia Kristel; one of the sexy students on display is future scream queen Brinke Stevens. - Private School (DVD) |

What role does money play in public and private schools in the US?
Q. Some say schools would do better if the government gave them more money. How does money improve both public and private schools and education within the scholastic system in the US?

A. The government's answer to everything..."If is broken, throw some money on it." Money plays a very important role in education. As educators we have a saying at school..."No dollar bill left behind!" The government is paying an obscene amount of money to pay for private tutoring for underpriviledged students. (More than $125 an hour!) Teachers can't apply to be private tutors and the tutoring program is unorganized and unstructured. Its really a scam. Why doesn't the government just give that money to the low paying teacher's salaries or for college tuition for teachers? In my opinion,, they don't really want good education. If people could read and think critically, they might overthow the rotten government. Intellegent, well… [cont.]
