Does the winner of prizes & cash have to pay taxes on their winnings before receiving them? Or later?
Q. I'm planning to enter a fitness contest and the winner receives a total of $50,000 in prizes which includes $40,000 cash, fitness equipment, and health supplements. Do the taxes have to be paid by the winner upfront, are they taken out of the prize money, or are the taxes paid at the end of the year? I may not be able to afford to even win the contest. LOL Too funny. I found this information on the irs.gov website which says the winner does need to pay taxes, but it doesn't say when. 4,00.html How can I calculate the total taxes on $50,000 worth of prizes? Does anyone know how much that would be?

A. Many contests deduct taxes from the prize, but they usually withhold 10% probably isn't enough to cover it. To calculate what the tax would be, find your marginal tax rate from last year (also called "bracket" - the percent that your highest dollar of earnings was taxed at last year). You can't just divide your total tax by total earnings, since the first many thousands of dollars aren't taxed at all, and the rate varies from there on up. Multiply your tax bracket percent by $50,000 and you'll be close. Might be more than that if the prize kicks you to the next bracket which it might - depends on your other income, marital status, and a few other things. With a prize that large, federal income taxes will probably be 25-28% of the… [cont.]

A. I would fix up gift bags with beauty related products. Do you sell nail polish at the salon? Maybe put 1 in each giftbag, if you don't sell nailpolish, Sally's Hair Supply or Wal-greens has mini nailpolishes you can purchase for $1. You could goto a local department store that sells perfume and see if they have some samples of the perfume to give you, I'd tell them what it is for so they might give you several. Fingernail files, loofa's, etc. could be placed in the bags. Check your local Dollar Store, alot of times you can buy the loofa's, bath mits, smaller sizes of lotions , and other beauty products there. Do you know a local Avon agent or Mary Kay rep? How do you get donations for golf outing prizes?
Q. I am in charge of my family reunion this year. There is always a golf outing the weekend before. The guy who's supposed to be planning it mysteriously disappeared, so I'm winging it. I have a tee time, now I need prizes. Aren't there places that donate stuff? Where should I go? Who should I ask? I've never done this before. Thanks!

A. Our local Rotary helps with this for an annual event. Maybe start their and other other local groups in your area. Check your local newspaper and suburban weekly for groups to contact. Offer them a sponsorship listing or other opportunity for cross-promotions :)

A. Its totally random. Some prizes like the fast passes are given out early so you have time to use them but you can win anytime your on Disney property. Where and when is chosen by computer, it will give a location and time, very specific like Star Tours, theater 2, row 3 seat 5. Its all luck of the draw, all you can do is go and hang out at the parks as much as possible. The one thing I won was mid afternoon and my sister and her kids won late afternoon.

A. So you have to go to the website and see more advertising... Also, with the hassle of entering codes via the website, the company probably saves money because people don't bother with the game.

How many baby shower prizes should I have?
Q. I'm in charge of door prizes and games. My question is how many gifts for guests should I have? There are about 35 people attending. We aren't doing favors, just nice prizes for whoever wins. Clarification: we are not doing a prize for each person. These are nice prizes, and the momma is very eco friendly and wouldn't want to give out junk gifts so that we can afford for everyone to have something. I can't spend $700 on prizes. Just wondering what the odds should be of winning a prize - how many prizes to have total if there are 35 people.

A. I would say enough for one prize for each plus one big one. Make them small prizes. Dollar store for 35 prizes and then a big door prize. Not everyone will get a prize but sometimes there are left over and you can let them take them as they leave. Good Luck and Have fun!! Edit: Well if you are just doing nice ones. Maybe 10 decent ones and a large one. You can still find some good deals at a local dollar store items discontinued or from store buy outs.

A. To get into the big $$ tourneys, you have to pay big $$. Try going to the FLW website. They have the tour schedule on that site. Also try the B.A.S.S. website, they have listings as well. It's like the girl above me said, you really have to research it yourself. There are so incredibly many different tourney out there, you just have to find some that you can afford, and can get to. The tournament trail is an expensive one, so unless your rich, or are very resourceful, you really have to work your way up from the bottom. The bottom being a start at a local fishing club. Fish those tourneys untill you can put together a good resume of your winnings. Then try to get some smaller sponsers. Just remember that you have to help them out, [cont.]

Are all the Nobel Prizes as worthless as the peace prize?
Q. I used to kind of revere the Nobel Prize like it's something to be proud of. Then, in the epitome of irony, a war mongerer gets the peace prize. To me this does two things: 1) demonstrates the total worthlessness of the Nobel Peace Prize and 2) calls into question the credibility of all the Nobel Prizes. So do they hand out the Nobel Prize in Chemistry to someone in the hopes that they will make a breakthrough in chemistry, or do they hand it out to someone who actually has made a breakthrough in chemistry.

A. No, the science prizes are awarded to people who have already made significant contributions. In fact, they are usually only awarded many years later, after the community has accepted and verified the scientific results made by the award nominees. There are a few things you should consider. First off, the nomination for the science awards is done in a different way by different people (the Swedes) than the peace prize (which is done by the Norwegians). The nominees are nominated by experts in the respective fields. It is easy to know who the experts in physics or chemistry are, while it is not easy to know who the experts in peace are.
