A. One great source of professional development over here in Asia is through the regular workshops the big named ESL text book publishers put on for our ESL teachers. We often get free invites for our teachers to join one or two-day workshops held at nice hotels, with light refreshments, and if we're really lucky, they throw in lunch as well. Lots of freebies, i.e. posters, pens, calenders and text books. The main two ESL publishers often use their popular text book authors to give presentations. We also have to endure the local government education office's efforts to put together some sort of seminar/workshop type event about once a year. Boring! If you are looking to organize local ESL professional development, I would strongly advise… [cont.]

Teaching grants for professional development?
Q. I am in the UK and in my third year of teaching. I have heard that teachers in their third/fourth year of teaching can have a grant that they can use for professional development (or that was the case a few years ago). I cant seem to find any information about it on the internet though. Does anyone know how to find out more or apply for this grant?

A. The best person to ask would be your headteacher as they would probably have to OK the time out of school you would need and might even need to OK your application too. I don't know much about any grants but most schools have in house courses and there should be information somewhere on pro development courses in the staff room. Many LEAs have a training centre you can go to as well

A. The Learning Disabilities Association of America has a lot of information about LD. LD online also has a great deal of information. You may also want to go to Autism Speaks and the Center for Autism and Related Disorders. This website www.universalclass.com/i/ crn/3976.htm has a CEU class on learning disabilities. Also look at the University of Phoenix for online classes. The Association of Retarded Citizens also offers a great deal of info on their website. For behavior issues, try the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis the read the latest research in behavior.

A. To keep up to date with current thinking in their subject area and in pedagogy (how to teach). There are constant advances in our understanding of how students learn, and teachers need to know what these are. It also refreshes and re-enthuses teachers and gives them a chance to share ideas with colleagues and experts in their field. Teachers need to do a set number of professional development hours as a condition of employment and certification.

Professional development conference proposal?
Q. I am a Reading and English teacher at a middle school. My team of teachers and I would like to attend a conference on middle school essentials this spring which includes many valuable topics such as content area literacy, differentiation, and the middle school philosophy. As the English teacher, I have been in charge of writing the proposal for attending the conference. The problem is that I am a first year teacher and have never written a proposal to attend a conference geared towards professional development. How should I open this paper? What other tips can you give me? Thank you. Our whole team wants to go. How can I mention why it is so important that all of us are permitted to attend the conference?

A. Just a couple of brainstorming ideas: How to prepare the middle school student to become a critical, independent thinker in high school; How can middle school teachers best support and encourage the transition from elementary school to high school; How to prepare the middle school student to meet the expectations of high school students... I hope this helps some! Good luck!!

A. Professional development goals cover a few broad areas 1. Increasing your knowledge - this would entail continuing education in your major field of expertise. 2. Increasing your knowledge of teaching technique - this is continuing education in education and classroom managment 3. Continuing professional development on current topics. 4. Participation in learning teams or committees that are involved in shaping school and education within your school or district. 5. Personal observation and setting personal goals that will increase your effectiveness as a teacher. 6. Mentoring new teachers.

A. I teach English to German business people, and I think the hardest thing is to teach grammar in a way that is easy to understand and to make it fun! I find using drawings of matchstick men with binoculars jumping from past, present and future, setting their sights at other times helps to explain the tenses. germans find it particularly difficult to understand the difference between past simple and present perfect. Another super fun subject is changing the meaning of a sentence by intonation! Good Luck

A. For help with this, I turned to my friend Alicia Mandel, who has run learning and leadership groups for companies including American Express as well as for the United States Olympic Committee. (She and I met at the USOC, when I was part of a team that helped Alicia think through a new leadership academy, Olympic University.) Alicia is about to become the vice president of organization development at Apollo Group, the parent company of the University of Phoenix. Alicia s advice: Professional development rarely happens in a classroom. In fact, studies show that only between 10-15% of professional development is successful in the classroom. It really happens through application of learning. Here are some ideas: -- Find other small… [cont.]

A. Depending on the number of people, divide into small groups. Pick a word for each group (don't tell the other groups). Give each group a stack of typing paper, stapler, scissors, and tape. Give the groups 10 minutes to use the available tools to make one person from each group into whatever that word is. Start with a word beginning with the letter A, like Aligator. Make the other groups guess what the word is, based on their ability to make one person into that word. This is a stupid and fun activity, but it engages everybody in each group, requires creativity and problem solving skills, managing and delegating tasks, and teamwork.

A. How it works with people who work under the legal services commision (eg solicitors) is that you have to undergo a certain amount of training each year as part of the qualification to hold the franchise. You can measure this by the cpd points each course gives you. If you dont qualify you wont get your quality mark i guess and then lose your money. It probably works much the same in other professions.

Q. I know the program is 2 years but was wondering what the starting salary is. They have a really good program so regardless it is worth applying for. Remember this is in IL (Chicago area) Thanks in advance! I did not ask Abbott Labs bc I'm researching. And just like any company they do not have to disclose any information and most of them don't. I'm ONLY looking for someone who has gone through the program to add input to this question. Thanks!
