How much homework can I expect my kids to have when they get in school?
Q. I never had much home work and I didn't do what homework I did get sent home with. My wife was recently helping our nephew with his homework every night after school. She stopped keeping him now. But the boy had at least 2 to 3 hours of homework every night. I think , he was not utilizing his time properly at school. But when my kids get into school , how much homework should I expect them to have?

A. It really depends on the teacher, grade, and school! Ours is in Kindergarten and she has no homework, but a friend of ours son who was in Kindergarten at a different school. (Both schools only about 10 miles apart), got at least 2 hours of homework a night. It was ridiculous. I think it should be how my teacher phrased it in high school, that homework should never take you more than an hour unless your slacking. But I think some teachers now a days are putting a lot more pressure on the kids. So when your kids get into school I would talk to the teacher if you feel they are getting to much homework, it really will take a toll on your child. *My friends kid hated school because he'd get home at 3, do homework till 6 and then… [cont.]

How much homework does your kids have vs what grade they are in?
Q. I really want to know how much homework your kids have when they come home from school everyday. (Well or how much they just had!) I don't remember ever having the homework my kids have. I will start - mine are in 3rd and 4th grade. 3rd grader has this math assignment every single night (it is one of two papers) even on Fridays and is supposed to read for about a half an hour. 4th grader has math of about 30 problems (pre-algerba) spelling words written 5x each (10 words) and has so to read for about that same half an hour. Also on Fridays too. I never understood the reading thing, they read for like an hour everyday IN school, both my boys read well above their grade levels. I think it is too much homework myself. A. I have found that it often isn't the grade, it is the school. Some schools emphasize "study hall" or a "study period" where students can work on homework. (Especially in schools where athletics are pushed.) This is great for students who otherwise would be too busy for schoolwork or don't have a good home environment to focus. Some teachers "allow" students to choose whether to work on homework at school. This is when you see the students' personality come out - some will tackle homework to be done, others will read instead and take homework home.
