High school is the name used in some parts of the world, particularly in Scotland, Northern America and Oceania, to describe an institution that provides all or part of secondary education. The actual term "high school" originated in Scotland with the world's oldest being the Royal High School (Edinburgh) in 1505, and spread to the New World countries as the high prestige that the Scottish educational system had at the time led several countries to employ Scottish educators to develop their state education systems. The Royal High School was used as a model for the first public high school in the United States, the English High School founded in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1821. The precise stage of schooling provided by a high school differs from country to country, and may vary within the same jurisdiction. In all of New Zealand and Malaysia along with parts of Australia and Canada, high school is synonymous with secondary school, and encompasses the entire secondary stage of education. Usage by countryAustraliaIn Australia, the term High School refers to Secondary School near exclusively. Yr 7 - 12. Q. My high school has every sport you can imagine...but paintball. Not to many schools has it on their list of sports around our high school, but I know some schools around the U.S. do! So how do I do this? Asked by grillzz5 - Tue Feb 26 08:23:25 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Get a petition and find some sponsors. Paintball is extremely expensive in comparison to soccer or baseball. If you get some sponsors then the school might be more considerate to your request. Schools, much like businesses revolve around the almighty dollar. The petition would show the school board of directors that many people support this activity. We all must face reality, in the fact that many people are offended by "guns" and "war games." If the amount of names supporting this endeavor are monumental in comparison to the nay-sayers, then that will give you an edge. After all the school shootings that have occurred lately, there is a lot of fear associated with any sport associated with guns. Q. I am currently taking high school courses through distance learning to receive my high school diploma. Some people have suggested for me to take the GED because sometimes I have difficulty studying from home. Ultimately, I would want to continue on with my courses. But I am wondering, what is the difference between the two? Will having a high school diploma guarantee better admissions in college and a better job? Asked by Trix_R_not_4_kids - Wed Jun 27 18:21:47 2007 - - 9 Answers - 1 Comments A. A high school diploma basically means you have completed the required courses at an accredited high school. A GED means you took a test demonstrating a basic proficiency in high school level courses. In most cases a GED should be just as good as a diploma. However, if you want to get into a competitive university you should probably contact the admissions office at the school to see if that would hurt your chances. I'm guessing that a GED with a high enough SAT or ACT score would probably be fine. In the real world, I think there is a bit of a bad stigma attached to a GED. In general, I think many people see that you got a GED and assume you couldn't hack it in a normal high school. Either way, once you have a job or two and/or start… [cont.] Answered by Justin H - Wed Jun 27 18:30:18 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "High School"
