Middle school and junior high school are levels of schooling that act as a sort of bridge between elementary and high schools. Most school systems use one term or the other, not both; furthermore, the terms are not usually interchangeable. In Chinese culture, especially China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, middle school is a synonym for secondary school. The term junior high dates to 1909 with the founding of Indianola Junior High School in Columbus, Ohio. The term middle school dates to 1950 in Bay City, Michigan. Q. Due to the recession, our middle school will be cutting out all middle school sports next year. My school is a very athletic school, and most things are sports centered and sports related. Without them, school won't be as fun or interesting, and many of the things we normally do won't happen because without the sports, there will be no reason to have them (Pep rallies, for example).
