In the United States and Canada, the terms learning disability and learning disorder (LD) refer to a group of disorders that affect a broad range of academic and functional skills including the ability to speak, listen, read, write, spell, reason, organize information, and do math. The disorders are neurological in origin and reflect information processing problems in the brain.

As the term is generally understood in the US and Canada, learning disabilities are not indicative of intelligence level. Rather, people with learning disabilities have trouble performing specific types of skills or completing tasks if left to figure things out by themselves or if taught in conventional ways.

In the UK, terms such as specific learning difficulty (SpLD), dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia are used to cover the type and range of learning difficulties referred to in the United States and Canada as "learning disabilities". In the UK, the term "learning disability" usually refers to a range of conditions that are almost invariably associated with more severe cognitive impairments; the term therefore generally is taken to be indicative of low intelligence in the UK.

A learning disability cannot be cured or fixed; it is a lifelong issue. With the right support and intervention, however, children with learning disabilities can succeed in school and go on to successful, often distinguished careers later in life.

How to Succeed in College With Learning Disabilities?
Q. i have a Learning Disabilities and going to school for medical assistant do u guys have any advice for me ?
Asked by classychic24xoxo - Wed May 13 14:11:17 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I have a disability myself, and I went to a school, and was quite successful at getting through the training. I actually did the medical office assistant training which is similar to that of the medical assistant training. Go to the school that you want to go to and go to their counselling department, and ask to talk to the person in charge of helping people with disabilities. Most different colleges will ask for an up to date pscyho-educational test to show the recommendations or the accomodations that are needed. With me, all that I needed was extra time on exams. You may need to have more time on exams, a reader or whatever, but go to the student services, and they will be able to help you talk with the teachers.

Q. Name some ways that teachers can help students overcome learning disabilities?

A. That would depend on the learning disability. Children have different learning styles and an effective education program would take advantage of that to help them succeed not just survive. Try reading _A Mind At A Time_ by Mel Levine, M.D. My son is autistic and has a program based on Applied Behavioral Analysis/positive behavioral modification. His first issue had been just being able to LOOK at his teacher, sit still, pay attention. He's come along way but even now something as simple as a morning routine in school has to be broken down into simple steps until he's mastered all of them. The ABBLS program helps his teachers pin point what the pre-cursor skills he needs to even begin learning. Because his expressive language (being… [cont.]

underachieving on the job and learning disabilities?
Q. Is it true that people with learning disabilities have trouble holding down jobs at first? I was fired from several restaurants when I was younger for being too slow,it was not that I was not trying to do my best.Do you think my learning disability had something to do with it.The other kids did not have any trouble at the job.

A. Maybe some of the employers you have had were the kind of people that required you to do unreasonable expectations. Some employers are the kind of people that work with numbers and have no Idea of what is really involved. Don't forget you are human; then if you have had bad experiences working at restaurants I would try different things. Make assessments on: 1. What is your ideal working conditions? 2> What are your interests? 3. What are your personality characteristics? 4. What can you improve yourself on? Okay I think sometimes learning disabilities have A lot to do with jobs.
