The Jews or the Jewish people are an ethnoreligious group originating in the Israelites or Hebrews of the Ancient Near East. The Jewish ethnicity, nationality, and religion are strongly interrelated, as Judaism is the traditional faith of the Jewish nation. Converts to Judaism, whose status as Jews within the Jewish ethnos is equal to those born into it, have been absorbed into the Jewish people throughout the millennia. In Jewish tradition, Jewish ancestry is traced to the Biblical patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the second millennium BCE. The Jews enjoyed two periods of political autonomy in their national homeland, the Land of Israel, during ancient history. The first era spanned from 1350 to 586 BCE, and encompassed the periods of the Judges, the United Monarchy, and the Divided Monarchy of the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah, ending with the destruction of the First Temple. The second era was the period of the Hasmonean Kingdom spanning from 140 to 37 BCE. Since the destruction of the First Temple, the diaspora has been the home of most of the world's Jews. Except in the modern State of Israel, established in 1948, Jews are a minority in every country in which they live, and they have frequently experienced persecution throughout history, resulting in a population that fluctuated both in numbers and distribution over the centuries. According to the Jewish Agency for Israel, as of 2007 there were 13.2 million Jews worldwide, 5.4 million of whom lived in Israel, 5.3 million in the United States, and the remainder distributed in communities of varying sizes around the world; this represents 0.2% of the current estimated world population. (Other sources, such as the Jewish Virtual Library, cite higher estimates of the American Jewish population, as many as 6.5 million, or more than one in 50 Americans.) These numbers include all those who consider themselves Jews whether or not affiliated with a Jewish organization. The total world Jewish population, however, is difficult to measure. In addition to halakhic considerations, there are secular, political, and ancestral identification factors in defining who is a Jew that increase the figure considerably. From Wikipedia under the

Why is the Jewish vote so important to presidential candidates when the Jewish population is small and most live in democratic states anyway? Asked by Lola - Sun Sep 14 20:56:31 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. Why shouldn't it be important? They are citizens too, and need representation. This particular election 3% of the population could mean the difference of winning and losing. To be honest I find your question somewhat offencive. Answered by UNCOLA - Sun Sep 14 21:05:09 2008 Is the child of a Jewish mother but a non-Jewish father considered fully Jewish? Q. My best friend has a Jewish mother, and a Swedish immigrant father who's a gentile. My friend wasn't raised very religious at all and her father never converted to Judaism, but she's become interested herself in Orthodox Judaism. I was just wondering would she be considered fully Jewish and could just start practicing Orthodox Judaism if she wanted without any type of conversion? Q. I work for a very jewish company, and I love my friends there. Plaese tell me what to post and what it means. thanks all. Asked by Tuggy - Wed Oct 8 23:17:06 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. It's great that you're so considerate of your friends. Yom Kippur is a very solemn holiday where we atone for our sins over the past year, so it's not really appropriate to wish them a happy one. Jews can't eat or drink during Yom Kippur, so it might be nice to wish them an "easy fast." Of course, if they're really observant, they probably won't check Facebook till it's over. :) Hope that helps! Answered by sophicmuse - Thu Oct 9 00:29:09 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Jewish"
