Special education is the education of students with special needs in a way that addresses the students' individual differences and needs. Ideally, this process involves the individually planned and systematically monitored arrangement of teaching procedures, adapted equipment and materials, accessible settings, and other interventions designed to help learners with special needs achieve a higher level of personal self-sufficiency and success in school and community than would be available if the student were only given access to a typical classroom education. Common special needs include learning disability, communication challenges, emotional and behavioral disorders, physical disabilities, and developmental disabilities. Students with these kinds of disabilities are likely to benefit from additional educational services, different approaches to teaching, and use of technology. Intellectual giftedness is a difference in learning and can also benefit from specialized teaching techniques or different educational programs, but the term "special education" is generally used to specifically indicate instruction of students whose special needs reduce their ability to learn independently or in a classroom, and gifted education is handled separately. The opposite of special education is general education. General education is the standard curriculum presented with standard teaching methods and without additional supports. From Wikipedia under the

I am a teacher of students with emotional disabilities, I am also enrolled in classes since I am on an emergency license. I am doing a project where I need the statistics of special education showing the races of students. So, I need to know the breakdown of each race in special education. I know that information is out there (it just has to be) but I cannot find it. Any help would be very much appreciated!! Thanks!! The key words to search are: "overidentification," "African American," and also "Emotionally Disturbed" or "Special Education." Your professor probably wants you to address the disproportionate numbers of African American males identified as "Emotionally Disturbed," as well as in other Special Education programs. Looking at the statistics, it appears to be a case racism or a lack of understanding of non-Eurocentric cultures. School values students who sit, raise their hands to speak, etc., which is thought to be Eurocentric and not sympathetic to the diverse cultural backgrounds of at-risk student populations. Teachers want to put the kid in special education classes, but the parents say no. The parents feel that the kid don't need special education and the kid is very smart but just needs extra time to learn schoolwork and things. The parents say they will never allow the teachers to put the child in special education. They believe that if their child goes to special education, the child will be a retarted person one day. Do parents have that right? Asked by crybaby - Sat Dec 8 00:13:01 2007 - - 9 Answers - 1 Comments A. Parent's do have the right to deny special services. However, it does not sound like they want to deny special services, they are defending their childs right to least restrictive environment. They are denying placement. Most children with ADD do not need full time sped classes, but rather benefit from being in regular ed classes a majority of the time, with either pull out for tutoring, or modified work amounts. He'll probably also need supports in the classroom to help with fidgiting and other manifestations of his disability. In an IEP meeting, the parents are equal members of the team (under federal law) and therefore their concerns must be considered in the IEP, in writing. Q. Hi, I want to know how can I train to be a special education teacher in Ontario, Canada. I have a psychology degree and I am planning to second degree in teacher training. Is special ed only an "additional qualification"? Thanks Asked by maketak - Thu Nov 6 08:24:39 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. You usually have to get your general teaching degree, and then you would have to specialize in the special education, which is approximately 2-3 more years on top of general education.
