Unschooling refers to a range of educational philosophies and practices centering around allowing children to learn through their natural life experiences, including child directed play, game play, household responsibilities, and social interaction, rather than through the confines of a conventional school. Exploration of activities is often led by the children themselves, facilitated by the adults. Unschooling differs from conventional schooling principally in the thesis that standard curricula and conventional grading methods, as well as other features of traditional schooling, are counterproductive to the goal of maximizing the education of each child. The term "unschooling" was coined in the 1970s and used by educator John Holt, widely regarded as the "father" of unschooling. While often considered to be a subset of homeschooling, unschoolers may be as philosophically estranged from homeschoolers as they are from advocates of conventional schooling. While homeschooling has been subject to widespread public debate, little media attention has been given to unschooling in particular. Popular critics of unschooling tend to view it as an extreme educational philosophy, with concerns that unschooled children will lack the social skills, structure, and motivation of their peers, especially in the job market. Within the homeschooling movement, unschooling has featured in debates on pedagogy and values, where it can be perceived as conflicting with Christian education. PhilosophyFrom Wikipedia under the

Do not check with your public school system unless you have decided to homeschool under their auspices. hslda does have info on homeshooling, but hey also have a political agenda that has nothing to do with homeschooling, and a lot of alarmist stories on their website, designed to panic people into joining their organization. Here is an apolitical site with information listed by state: You must comply with the law, no matter what form of homeschooling you choose. Here is info on various methods, including unschooling: All the best. Answered by ozboz48 - Thu Aug 21 14:31:13 2008 Is unschooling legal in the uk? Q. i know homeschooling is, but i would prefer to unschool. Asked by Crafty Mummy - Fri Oct 3 08:46:46 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Oh yes, totally legal and very popular! Most of the local families I know are largely if not totally autonomous (unschoolers). Even if they don't start off that way everyone ends up drifting in that direction because you really can't force a child to learn if they don't want to and it's even harder to say no when they're desperately keen to learn about something even if it is dinosaurs ;-) Answered by firebird2110x - Fri Oct 3 15:46:12 2008 What is YOUR opinion on unschooling?
Q. I am very interested in homeschooling. This is NOT a debate on whether or not to homeschool. I just want to know some informed opinions about this new "unschooling" business. Thanks! Asked by teagansmummy - Sun Feb 25 23:49:23 2007 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments A. For three years I homeschooled 2 boys (2-5 and 8-11) and a girl (9-12). We tried different ways to discover which worked best for each child. Unschooling turned out to be the best choice for the middle boy, who really couldn't focus on the same subject for long. Unschooling allowed him to make choices as to what interested him, and follow that. It only worked because he had a very wide range of interests, and we still managed to work "the basics" into his choices. However, the oldest needed a very structured format, because she did not have the same drive as her brother to explore the world around her. Learning styles are just as important at home as they should be at school. Answered by The Hippy Momma - Sun Feb 25 23:57:59 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Unschooling"
