A military organization is an organization which exists to fight wars. It has a legalized and legitimized use of violence in the interests of the state which it serves. In a democracy or other political system run in the public interest, it is a public force.

In North American English military is common as a noun -one can talk about "a military" or "the military"- but in British and Commonwealth English it is normally used as an adjective -one refers to "a military force" or "military organization".

How many hours do a military active member work per week?
Q. I guess that this varies from MOS, but I was reading some question that people posted and one of them was about military and someone wrote that the military usually doesn't work 40 a week. He was comparing the military life to the civilian. Is this true? And if so, how many hours do military active member work per week?
Asked by SPC - Tue Apr 7 17:10:41 2009 - - 16 Answers - 2 Comments

A. LOL...military doesnt work 40 hours a week... no... they work LONGER. 6:30-7:30 PT 0900-1700 duty hours 9 hour days IF youre lucky because most units keep you until between 1800 and 1900... and if youre ramping up for deployment or youre out in the field then you are working twice that. Also take into consideration the 12-24 hour duties such as CQ and Staff Duty... Also take into consideration those that dont work regular duty hours such as Firefighters and Military Police... who often work 12 hour shifts...not including PT, weapons draw, guard mount, and paperwork. And lets not forget the actual deployments... where you could be out in the middle of nowhere on a mission for weeks at a time and the only sleep you get is 30 minutes… [cont.]

What techniques does the military use to strip a person of their pride?
Q. I have heard from several different sources that the military first strips a person of his pride and then rebuilds them up again. Is this all branches of the military? How, exactly, do they do it?
Asked by Poindexter - Sat Jun 14 00:47:49 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I don't think "pride" is the right word here. The military needs people to work as a unit, not as a bunch of individuals. The purpose of basic military training is to make you quit thinking of yourself first and to adjust your attitude to a military way of thinking...that means honor, duty, commitment, service before self, and the ability to follow orders. All branches do it...but the techniques may vary. They do it by making sure you are very rushed and learning new and sometimes difficult things every waking moment. The process of applying significant physical and mental stress allows your training/drill instructors to see if you have what it takes to be successful in the military, or to get you out of the military before they spend… [cont.]

What branch of military service should I join?
Q. I am a seventeen-year-old girl from Illinois. I am planning on joining the military through their Delayed Entry Program (DEP). I scored a 96 on my ASVAB and am quite interested in the Cryptologic Linguist Option. Which branch of service would be best suited to me? Right now I am deciding between Air Force and Marines, but I'm open to Navy, Coast Guard, or Army as well. If any of you could help me on this matter it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much!

A. Air Force, definately. The marines are a very small branch, adjuct to the navy, and don't really do much of anything in the way of cryptography (they pretty much use whatever cyptography the navy does). Likewise, the coast guard doesn't really do any cryptography. The Air Force, however, has these C-135's (707) that fly all over the world gathering radio traffic. They have linguistics experts trained in several languages who A) are on the planes and kind of make a first pass looking for the most important stuff to focus on, and B) on the ground who analyze the tapes when the planes come home. The Air Force is into cryptographic linguistics, big time. The other option would be the NSA, which is really kind of a joint venture between… [cont.]

  • "In the various states of society, armies are recruited from very different motives. Barbarians are urged by the love of war; the citizens of a free republic may be prompted by a principle of duty; the subjects, or at least the nobles, of a monarchy, are animated by a sentiment of honor; but the timid and luxurious inhabitants of a declining empire must be allured into the service by the hopes of profit, or compelled by the dread of punishment".
  • "What the main drift of the twentieth century has revealed is that the economy has become concentrated and incorporated in the great hierarchies, the military has become enlarged and decisive to the shape of the entire economic structure; and moreover the economic and the military have become structurally and deeply interrelated, as the economy has become a seemingly permanent war economy; and military men and policies have increasingly penetrated the corporate economy".
