Problem solving is a mental process and is part of the larger problem process that includes problem finding and problem shaping. Considered the most complex of all intellectual functions, problem solving has been defined as higher-order cognitive process that requires the modulation and control of more routine or fundamental skills. Problem solving occurs when an organism or an artificial intelligence system needs to move from a given state to a desired goal state. From Wikipedia under the

Q. I have an interview this week, and I've been told I may be asked some "problem solving and behavioral abilities" questions, because they say they want to know the process you use to solve a problem. What kinds of questions will they ask me? This is for a customer relations type job at an internet start-up Asked by Kitty - Tue Oct 7 19:01:01 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I have been specializing in HR for over 12 years and there are so many possible questions that are used during behavioral interviewing it is to difficult for me to give you a complete scenario. However, below I have listed a website that will give you a good idea of the type of questions that you will be asked. I can think of a popular one that was not listed on the website which I will include under the web address. Here is the other question that I was surprised to find was not included on the website I listed above. What do you consider to be a strength(s) and a weakness(s) that you have? Q. I know that there are methods like "guess and check", and "work backwards", and "take your problem as solved". But it seems like there should be more methods that are useful for relating what you "know" in a problem to what you "want" in the problem. What other "Relate" methods would you suggest?? I am not talking about low level algebra problems. I am talking about general problem-solving strategies for problems anywhere in mathematics. From Topology to SDE's. From algebra to combinatorics, and problems even not directly mathematical. Asked by nicholasdewaal - Tue Feb 26 19:01:59 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Howdy & I sure hope all is well. :) As for your question: What you're looking for are theorems & proven formulas. The 2 most popular & most used are the concept of cross-multiplication & the distance, time & speed formula: Distance = Time*Speed Usually, they're used in tandem: I want to drive from Toronto to City X & I'm allowed to drive 100Km/Hr, while the distance is Y Km. So how long is it going to take me to get there? 1 Hr--->100 Km X Hr--->Y Km You cross multiply & solve for either X or Y, depending on which of the 2 is given. A word about problem solving: First, be clear what is being asked, for example volume. Then determine the appropriate formula(s) that you will need to solve that question. Then identify how many of the… [cont.] Answered by Cogano - Tue Feb 26 19:23:04 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Problem Solving"
