Specific grants for a work at home mom trying to start an online store to support family?
Q. My husband is a veteran and full-time student at a major university. He doesn't have the time to work, so I have to pick up the slack. I'm a stay-at-home mom and want to keep it that way, so I'm trying to start and online business, I have pretty much everything in place (suppliers, domain, ein, etc...) but I need funding. Instead of a list of places with grants listed in them, does anyone have a link to a specific grant that I qualify for or a loan that doesn' have to be paid back right away (like maybe delayed a few years with subsidized interest). I'm in Texas. Please send specific grants or loan because I already know the different sites to search, I've just had no luck finding one I'd qualify for, maybe I'm just missing it. BEA- i… [cont.]

A. There is no such grant, as you yourself just found out. As to loans, your prospects don't look good. Unless you are willing to offer your house as collateral (or plan to use the loan to purchase tangible long-lived assets), no one is going to lend to you. Your best bet is to find an investor willing to buy equity in your company, but those are few and far between... You might qualify for an SBA microloan: but there are only seven lenders in the entire Texas that particilate in this program. There may or may not be one in your immediate vicinity...

Where can I find Government Grants to help start a new business?
Q. I know that they say females are a minority (yeah right) and that the government sometimes does grants to start a new business. I am trying to find free info on Grants. Does anyone know of anything that could help me?

The government through SBA assists women in starting a business by giving them access to special loan programs, as well as certification programs (8A Certification) to be able to better compete in the government contracting process. But not grants. It is hard to find grants to start a business -- whether a male or female, a minority or not. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate (in particular Matthew Lesko), federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for a for-profit business. Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) and Grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. How many different kinds of grants are there and where can I find them?
Q. I heard there are hundreds of different grants you can apply for out there when it comes to school. I.E Orville Reddenbacker makes you write an essay of why you love popcorn and they give you a thousand dollar scholarship, scholarships for people with red hair, etc. Where can I find all of those, is there a list online or a book? I really want to go to school so Im looking for all the help I can get.

A. To be considered for any federal grants, first you have to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid - www.fafsa.ed.gov). This will generate and EFC (Expected Family Contribution) that schools use in conjunction with their COA (Cost of Attendance) to determine what your aid package will be.
